Debate Concerning Kalimah at-Tawhid

Shaykh Muhammad ibn Abd'il Wahhab (rahimahullah)

A Debate Concerning (The Impossibility of) ‎Kalimah at-Tawhid; Tawhid and Shirk Being ‎Together

This Risalah (pamphlet) covers (in summary) the debate between Muhammad ‎ibn Abd’il Wahhab (rahimahullah) and some people amongst the People of ‎the Huraymilah concerning the issue of Kalimah at-Tawhid, Tawhid and ‎Shirk being together.‎

Muhammad ibn Abd’il Wahhab (rahimahullah) said the following to them:‎

We asked all of those who came to us from amongst the knowledgeable ones or other than ‎them regarding La Ilaha Illallâh. We have not come across ‎that in their presence, this (Kalimah) is nothing but a statement which has no ‎meaning. According to them, its meaning is solely the Lafdh (utterance), and that whoever utters it is Muslim. Sometimes, they said that it has a meaning, however, its meaning (according to them) is that “Allâh has no partner in His Mulk (possession).

We say: La Ilaha Illallâh is not (something which is to be uttered) solely with ‎the tongue, and when a Muslim utters it, it is a condition that his heart ‎comprehends its meaning. This is what the Rusul (Messengers) came for. The Rusul ‎had not (only) come with the (issue of) Mulk (belonging to Allah). I am going to ‎elucidate the issue of Tawhid and Shirk inshaAllah.‎

(…)‎

You know the Mashad (literally place of martyrdom) which had Qubbah ‎‎(dome) on it. A group of people pray Dhuhr there and then stand and turn to ‎the grave; and (with this) they turn their back to the Qa’bah. (While taking ‎the grave as a Qiblah) they offer two Ra’kat for Ali (radiyallahu anh). Their ‎prayer which they offer to Allah is Tawhid and the prayer that offered to ‎Ali (radiyallahu anh) is Shirk. (I asked them) do you comprehend this?

They ‎said: Yes we do. The one who offers prayer to Allah and to other than Him ‎becomes Mushrik.‎

Allah has right over his slave on his body and possession. Salat (supplication) ‎is the Zakah of the body. Zakah on possession is right of (Allah) Subhanahu ‎wa Ta’ala. If you pay Zakah for (the sake of) Allah (Azza wa Jalla) then ‎change it and pay it to the shrine then your Zakah for Allah is Tawhid and ‎Zakah for the creation is Shirk.‎

In the same manner shedding blood… if it was slaughtered for Allah then it ‎is Tawhid. If it was slaughtered for other than Him then it is Shirk. As Allah ‎Ta’ala commanded:‎

"Say (O Muhammad): Verily, my Salat (prayer), my Nusuk (sacrifice), my life, ‎and my death are for Allah, the Lord of the Alamin (mankind, Jinns and all ‎that exists). He has no partner." (al-An’am 6/162-163)

(The word) Nusuk ‎‎(mentioned in the Ayah) is sacrificing.

In the same manner Tawakkul (trust, relying upon) which is a type of ‎worship…  If you have Tawakkul in Allah then it is Tawhid. If you have ‎Tawakkul to the owner of the shrine then it is Shirk. Allah Ta’ala ‎commanded:‎

"So worship Him and put your trust in Him." (Huud 11/123)‎

When it comes to the Du'a (supplication) which is the greatest of these, do ‎you understand that it is mentioned (in the Hadith):

الدُّعَاءُ هُوَ الْعِبَادَةُ

"Du'a is the (core and) essence of Ibadaah (worship)" (Tirmidhi; Ahmad, ‎Musnad)?

They said: Yes!..

Allah Ta’ala commanded:‎

"And the Masajid (places of worship) are for Allah (alone): So invoke not any ‎one along with Allah." (Jinn 72/18)

Do you comprehend that those who make Du'a here to Allah, (and also) to ‎Zubayr; make Du'a to Allah, (and also) to Abd'ul Qadir are Mukhlis (sincere) ‎when they make Du'a to Allah and are Mushrik when they make Du'a to other ‎than Him? Do you understand this?

They said: Yes!..‎

Shakyh Muhammad ibn Abd’il Wahhab (rahimahullah) said: So if you ‎comprehend this matter, this is the issue between the people and us.‎

If people say: They (Mushrikin) worship the idols, they make Du'a to them ‎and asking from them. We are sinner slaves; they are Salihin (righteous). We ‎are seeking Wasilah (means) with their status.‎

Then tell them: Isa (alayhi salam) was Nabi (prophet) of Allah and his mother ‎‎(Maryam) was amongst the Salihin (righteous). Likewise Uzayr was amongst ‎the Salihin (righteous), likewise the angels. Concerning those who make Du'a ‎to them, Allah informed us that they did not ask for anything from them, ‎they solely asked for Shafaah (intercession) and Qurbiyyah (intimacy) due to ‎their situation.

Read them the following statement of Allah Ta’ala concerning the Malaikah (angels):

‎{وَيَوْمَ يَحْشُرُهُمْ جَمِيعاً ثُمَّ يَقُولُ لِلْمَلائِكَةِ}

"On the Day He will gather them all together, and say to the angels: Was it ‎you that these men used to worship?" (Saba 34/40)‎

(Allah) stated the following concerning the prophets:

‎{يَا أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ لا تَغْلُوا فِي دِينِكُمْ}

"O people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians)! Do not exceed the limits in ‎your religion!.." (an-Nisa 4/171)‎

(Allah) stated the following concerning the Salihin (righteous):‎

"Say (O Muhammad): Call unto those besides Him whom you pretend (to be ‎gods)!.." (al-Isra 17/56)‎

Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) did not differentiate between them (and ‎fought with all of them).‎
