The Polytheists Affirm Tawhîd'ur Rubûbiyyah and Reject Tawhîd'ul Ulûhiyyah!

Taqiyy'ud Dîn al-Maqrîzî Rahimahullâh (854H)1

There is no doubt that the polytheists did not reject Tawhîd'ur Rubûbiyyah (the Unification of Allâh's Lordship). Rather they affirmed that Allâh Subhânahu solely is their creator, the creator of the heavens and the earth, and the one who takes care of the affairs of the entire universe. The polytheists only rejected Tawhîd'ul Ilâhiyyah and Mahabbah (the Unification of Allâh's Divinity and Love), as Allâhu Taâlâ narrated from them in His statement,

"And of mankind are some who take (for worship) others besides Allah as Andâd (pl. Nidd; rivals, equals, partners to Allâh), they love them as they love Allâh. But those who believe, love Allâh more (than anything else)." (al-Baqarah, 2/165)

When they equated others with Allâh in this Tawhîd, they became polytheists, as Allâhu Taâlâ stated,

"All praise is due to Allâh who created the heavens and the earth, and made darkness and light; yet those who disbelieve equate (others) with their Lord." (al-An'âm, 6/1)

Allâh Subhânahu wa Taâlâ has taught His slaves how to distance from Shirk with Tawhîd'ul Ilâhiyyah and that Allâhu Taâlâ is worthy of being singled out as Walî (ally), Hakam (judge), and Rabb (Lord).

Allâhu Taâlâ stated,

"Say: Would I take as a Walî someone other than Allâh?" (al-An'âm, 6/14)

Allâhu Taâlâ also stated,

"So, should I seek someone other than Allâh as Hakam?" (al-An'âm, 6/114)

Allâhu Taâlâ said,

"Say: Should I seek a Rabb other than Allâh?" (al-An'âm, 6/164)

So there is no Walî, Hakam, or Rabb save Allâh. Whoever equates anything with Allâh has associated partners to Him in His Ulûhiyyah, even if he unifies Him in His Rubûbiyyah. Tawhîd'ur Rubûbiyyah is what the creation, both Mu'min and Kâfir, have united upon. Tawhîd'ul Ilâhiyyah is where the path of the believers and polytheists separate. This is why the word of Islâm is "La Ilaha Illallâh." If someone was to say "La Rabba Illallâh" then according to the verifiers, it would be accepted. Tawhîd'ul Ilâhiyyah is what is requested from the slaves. This is why the origin of the word "Allâh" -according to the opinion of Sîbawayh which is correct and the opinion of the majority of his followers except those who were Shâdh (exceptional/odd) in this matter- is the word "Ilah".

Considering what we have stipulated from "Ilah" and that it is the Mahbûb (loved one) due to the perfect attributes coming together under it, Allâh is: A word comprising all of the meanings of the best names and highest attributes and it is what the polytheists reject. The Rabb Subhânahu wa Taâlâ argues on behalf of Tawhîd'ul Ilâhiyyah by way of them unifying Him in His Rubûbiyyah. As Allâhu Taâlâ stated,

"Say: Praise is due to Allâh, and peace be on His slaves whom He has chosen! Is Allâh better, or (all) that you ascribe as partners (to Him)? Or the One who created the heavens and the earth and sent down for you water from the sky? Then We caused to grow with it gardens, full of glamour. It was not within your ability to grow their trees. Is there any deity along with Allâh? No, but they are a people who equate (others with Allâh)." (an-Naml, 27/59-60)

Whenever Allâhu Taâlâ mentioned a portion of His signs, He subsequently stated, "Is there any deity along with Allâh?" With this, Allâh Subhânahu wa Taâlâ has clarified that the polytheists were pausing with regards to confirming Tawhîd'ul Ilâhiyyah, not Rubûbiyyah, although there are some polytheists who associate partners in Rubûbiyyah, as will be mentioned later Inshâllâhu Taâlâ.

In short, Allâhu Taâlâ raises an argument against those who reject Ilâhiyyah with their confirmation of Rubûbiyyah.

1- al-Maqrîzî, Tajrîd'ut Tawhîd'il Mufîd, p. 7-9.
"If the ignorant persists, gets haughty, is determined upon his transgression and misguidance, chooses blindness over guidance, and if what he falls into and disputes with regards to is Shirk Akbar (major Shirk) that brings the person who commits it out of the fold of the faction of Muslims to the party of polytheists, then in this case, the just verdict is the sword!"
