The Shirk of the Contemporaries Is Graver Than the Previous Nations

Shaykh'ul Islâm Muhammad bin Abd'il Wahhâb Rahimahullâh said,

"So when you have recognized that that which the polytheists of our era call "I'tiqâd" is actually the Shirk which the Qur'ân was revealed regarding, and for which Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam fought against the people, then also know that the Shirk of the previous nations was less grave than the Shirk of the people of our era, on account of two matters:

One of them is that the previous nations did not associate partners or call upon angels, the saints, or idols alongside Allâh except in times of ease. As for times of hardship, they would devote the religion sincerely to Allâh alone, just as He Taâlâ said,

"And when harm touches you upon the sea, those that you call upon besides Him vanish from you except Him. But when He brings you safely to land, you turn away (from Him). And man is ever ungrateful." (al-Isrâ 17/67)

He also said,

"Say: Tell me if the punishment of Allâh comes to you or the Hour befalls you, would you invoke other than Allâh, if you are truthful? Rather, Him alone you will invoke and if He wills, He would remove that (distress) for which you invoke Him, and you would forget those you associate with Him." (al-An'âm 6/40-41)

He said,

"And when adversity touches man, he calls upon his Lord (Allâh Alone), turning to Him in penitence, but when He bestows a favour upon him from Himself, he forgets that for which he called upon before, and he sets up rivals to Allâh, in order to mislead others from His Path. Say: Take pleasure in your disbelief for a while: surely, you are (one) of the dwellers of the Fire!" (az-Zumar 39/8)

Allâhu Taâlâ also said,

"And when they are covered by waves like canopies, they pray to Allâh, having faith exclusively in Him." (Luqmân 31/32)

So, whoever understands this matter Allâh has made clear in His Book, which is that the polytheists whom Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam fought against used to call upon Allâh and other than Him in times of ease. As for times of hardship, they would not call upon anyone but Allâh alone, without any partners, and they would forget their masters, the difference between the Shirk of the people of our times and the Shirk of the previous nations will become clear to him.

However, where are those whose hearts actually understands this matter with a deep-rooted understanding? Allâh is the only One from whom aid is sought.

The second matter is that the previous nations used to call upon others alongside Allâh. These were people close to Allâh, either angels, prophets, or saints, or they would call upon trees or stones that are in obedience to Allâh and are not disobedient to Him.

As for the people of our time, they call upon others who are the most corrupt of people alongside Allâh. Those who call upon them are the very ones who narrate their sinfulness, such as committing adultery, stealing, abandoning the prayer, and other such matters.

Those who have beliefs with regards to the righteous and those who do not disobey like wood or stone, are lighter than those who have beliefs in those whom he is a witness to and testifies to their corruption and mischief."1

Shaykh'ul Islâm Muhammad bin Abd'il Wahhâb Rahimahullâh also said,

"We shall end our speech with a verse mentioned by Allâhu Taâlâ in His Kitâb (Book i.e., Qur'an), which will clarify to you that the Kufr of the Mushrikûn of our time is greater than the Kufr of those whom Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam fought against. Allâhu Taâlâ said,

"And when harm touches you upon the sea, those that you call upon besides Him vanish from you except Him. But when He brings you safely to land, you turn away (from Him). And man is ever ungrateful." (al-Isrâ 17/67)

Allâhu Taâlâ has mentioned that when the Kuffâr were afflicted with harm, they would abandon their leaders and the Mashâyikh (pl. of Shaykh; scholars), therefore, they did not call upon them and they did not seek help through them. Rather, they showed sincerity to Allâh alone, without associating any partners and they sought aid from Him alone. However, when ease came, they would commit Shirk.

You see that when the Mushrikûn of our times -even though some of them claim to be Ahl'ul Ilm (people of knowledge), possessing Zuhd (asceticism), Ijtihâd (striving hard), and Ibâdah (worship)- when afflicted with harm, they begin to seek Istighâthah (help) from other than Allâh, like Ma'rûf (al-Karkhî) (d. 200H) or Abd'ul Qâdir al-Jîlânî (d. 561H), or those greater than them, like Zayd Ibn'ul Khattâb Radiyallâhu Anh and az-Zubayr Radiyallâhu Anh or those who are greater than them, like Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam. Wallâh'ul Musta'ân (help is sought solely from Allâh).

And more severe and disastrous than this is that they seek help from the Tawâghît (pl. Tâghût), the Kuffâr (disbelievers), and rebellious, like Shamsân, Idrîs who is called al-Ashqar, Yûsuf, and their likes."2

The Shaykh Rahimahullâh also said,

"Surely, the Mushrik (polytheist) in our time are worse in shirk than those Mushrik of the past (pre-Islamic times). For, the ones of the past used to worship others besides Allâh only in prosperity and return to genuine faith in adversity, whereas the present day Mushrik are constant in their Shirk, regardless of prosperity or adversity. The evidence for this is the statement of Allâhu Taâlâ,

"So when they embark on a ship, they invoke Allâh, having their faith purely in Him. But when He saves them (and brings them) to the land, in no time they associate others with Him." (al-Ankabût 29/65)

According to this the one who supplicates, is the one who worships. The evidence for this is the statement of Allâhu Taâlâ,

"Who is more astray than him who invokes, instead of Allâh, those who will not respond to him up to the Day of Judgement; and they are totally unaware of their prayers." (al-Ahqâf 46/5)"3

In the same manner Shaykh Abd'ur Rahmân bin Hasan Rahimahullâh said,

"The (former) Arab polytheists and their likes used to refuse La Ilaha Illallâh in word and in meaning. And these polytheists (of today) accept it in word, yet refuse its meaning. So you find one of them saying this statement while at the same time deifying other than Allâh with various types of worship such as love, glorification, fear, hope, reliance, supplication, and other types of worship. Rather, their Shirk is many times graver in level than the Shirk of the Arab's (of the Jâhiliyyah era). For if one of them (today's polytheists) falls into hardship, he devotes supplication to other than Allâh, believing that which they call upon can give them faster relief than Allâh. This is contrary to the earlier polytheists. This is because they used to associate partners during times of ease, and in times of hardship, they would sincerely call upon Allâh alone, as Allâhu Taâlâ said in the verse,

"So when they embark on a ship, they invoke Allâh, having their faith purely in Him. But when He saves them (and brings them) to the land, in no time they associate others with Him." (al-Ankabût 29/65)

This clarifies that the polytheists of this era are more ignorant about Allâh and His unification in comparison to the (former) Arab polytheists and those before them."4

Ibnu Aqîl Rahimahullâh said, "If you want to learn the status of Islâm among contemporary people, then do not look at their crowds at the doors of the mosques and their crying Labbayk at the Mawqif (during Hajj). On the contrary, look at their collusion with the enemies of the Sharî'ah!" (Ibnu Muflih, al-Âdâb'ush Sharî'ah, 1/237)
