Statements by the Scholars Regarding the Term Tâghût

As-Suyûtî Rahimahullâh (911 H)

"Al-Firyâbî, Sa'îd bin Mansûr, Ibnu Jarîr, and Ibnu Abî Hâtim recorded on the authority of Umar Ibn'ul Khattâb Radiyallâhu Anh that he said, "Tâghût is the devil."

Ibnu Jarîr and Ibnu Abi Hâtim recorded on the authority of Jâbir bin Abdillâh Radiyallâhu Anh that he said once he was asked about what the Tâghûts are, "They are the soothsayers upon whom the devils descend."

Ibnu Abi Hâtim recorded on the authority of Ikrimah that he said, "Tâghût is the soothsayer."

Ibnu Jarîr recorded on the authority of Abu'l Âliyah that he said: "Tâghût is the magician."

Ibnu Jarîr, Ibn'ul Mundhir, and Ibnu Abî Hâtim recorded on the authority of Mujâhid that he said, "Tâghût is the devil in the image of man. They appeal to him for legal decisions and he is in control of their affairs."

Ibnu Abî Hâtim recorded on the authority of Mâlik bin Anas that he said, "Tâghût are things that are worshipped besides Allâh."1

1- As-Suyûtî, ad-Durr'ul Manthûr, 2/22.
Ibnu Aqîl Rahimahullâh said, "If you want to learn the status of Islâm among contemporary people, then do not look at their crowds at the doors of the mosques and their crying Labbayk at the Mawqif (during Hajj). On the contrary, look at their collusion with the enemies of the Sharî'ah!" (Ibnu Muflih, al-Âdâb'ush Sharî'ah, 1/237)

Abâ Butayn Rahimahullâh (1282 H)

After mentioning the statements of the scholars regarding Tâghût, Abâ Butayn an-Najdî Rahimahullâh said,

"Therefore, it is derived from the compilation of the statements of the scholars Rahimahumullâh that the name Tâghût comprises everything which is worshipped besides Allâh and all of the main-figures of deviation who call to Bâtil and beautifies it.

It also comprises all of those who are set by people to judge between them with the rulings of Jâhiliyyah, which are in opposition to the ruling of Allâhu Taâlâ and His Rasûl Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam.

It also comprises the soothsayer, magician, and custodians of the idols (and places of idol-worshipping; i.e., shrines) who call to worshipping the ones in the graves and others with what they lie of stories which mislead the ignorant people, deluding people that the ones in the graves and its likes fulfil the needs of those who turn towards them and directs (their worship) to him, and that they will do such-and-such, which are lies in reality or from the acts of the shayâtîn (pl. shaytân; devils). The shayâtîn do this so that they may delude the people that the one who is in the grave and its likes fulfil the needs of those who direct (their worship) to him, consequently casting them in ash-Shirk'ul Akbar and its aftermath.

The origin of all of these types and the greatest of them all is the shaytân: he is the greatest Tâghût.

Allâh Subhânahu wa Taâlâ knows best."2

2- ad-Durar'us Saniyyah, 2/301-302.
"If the ignorant persists, gets haughty, is determined upon his transgression and misguidance, chooses blindness over guidance, and if what he falls into and disputes with regards to is Shirk Akbar (major Shirk) that brings the person who commits it out of the fold of the faction of Muslims to the party of polytheists, then in this case, the just verdict is the sword!" (al-Fath'ur Rabbânî min Fatâwâ'l Imâm ash-Shawkânî, 1/185)

Muhammad bin Abd'il Wahhâb Rahimahullâh (1206 H)

When it comes to the Description of Rejecting the Tâghût it is,

- That you believe worshipping other than Allâhu Taâlâ is vain,

- That you abandon worshipping other than Allâhu Taâlâ,

- That you have Bughdh (hatred) towards worshipping other than Allâhu Taâlâ,

- That you declare Takfîr upon those who worship other than Allâhu Taâlâ, and

- That you have enmity towards them.3

The meaning of rejecting the Tâghût is: to distance from everything that is believed in other than Allâh, from a Jinn, a human, a tree, a rock, or other than these, testifying to their Kufr and misguidance, and hating them -even if they are your father and brother.

As for the one who says: "I do not worship other than Allâhu Taâlâ. Yet, I have no objection to the Sâdat and tombs over the graves and the likes."

Then he is a liar in his statement "La Ilaha Illallâh". Such person has not believed in Allâhu Taâlâ and has not rejected the Tâghût.4

4- A Pamphlet Concerning Kalimat'ut Tawhîd -Comprehending The Shahâdah (Testimony) Of La Ilaha Illallâh-.
"If the ignorant persists, gets haughty, is determined upon his transgression and misguidance, chooses blindness over guidance, and if what he falls into and disputes with regards to is Shirk Akbar (major Shirk) that brings the person who commits it out of the fold of the faction of Muslims to the party of polytheists, then in this case, the just verdict is the sword!"
