  • O people! Respond (with obedience) to Allah's Call

لا إله إلا الله تنفي أربعه وتثبت أربعة
4 Issues that Lailaha Illallah (Kalimah at-Tawhid) Confirms and Rejects

Shaykh'ul Islam Muhammad ibni Abd'il-Wahhab

4 Issues that Kalimah at-Tawhid Confirms and Rejects1:

Shaykh'ul Islam Muhammad Ibn Abdil-Wahhab,  may Allah sanctify his soul and brighten his grave, said:

Know that, may Allah mercy upon you! Meaning of
لا إله إلا الله La ilaha illallah is نفي Nafy (rejection) and إثبات Ithbat (confirmation). لا إله La ilaha rejects and إلا الله illallah confirms; rejects 4 issues and confirms 4 issues as well. Rejects the الآلهة al-Aliha (plural of Ilah), الطواغيت at-Tawaghit (plural of Taghout), الأنداد al-Andad (plural of Nidd) and الأرباب al-Arbab (plural of Rabb).

الإله Ilah is the thing that you direct yourself towards so that you bring forth the Khayr (goodness) and dispel (harm). So you take it as an Ilah.

الطواغيت Tawaghit is the one who is worshiped and the one who is content (with it) or presents himself as a person which Ibadaah (worship) should be directed to. Such as شمسان Shamman, تاج Tajj or أبو حديدة Abu Hadida.

الأنداد Andad: Everything, that keeps you away from the Din of Islam; from your family or home or tribe or wealth is a ند Nidd (compeer, equal). (Allah) Taalas Qavl (statement):

{وَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَنْ يَتَّخِذُ مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ أَنْدَاداً يُحِبُّونَهُمْ كَحُبِّ اللَّهِ}

"Yet there are men who take (for worship) others besides Allah, as equal (with Allah): They love them as they should love Allah." (al-Baqarah 2/165)

الأرباب al-Arbab is the one who issues a Fatwa (verdict) so that you oppose الحق al-Haqq (the truth) and you obey him. (Allah) Taalas Qavl (statement):

{اتَّخَذُوا أَحْبَارَهُمْ وَرُهْبَانَهُمْ أَرْبَاباً مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ وَالْمَسِيحَ ابْنَ مَرْيَمَ وَمَا أُمِرُوا إِلاَّ لِيَعْبُدُوا إِلَهاً وَاحِداً لا إِلَهَ إِلاَّ هُوَ سُبْحَانَهُ عَمَّا يُشْرِكُونَ}

"They take their priests and their anchorites to be their lords beside Allah, and (they take as their Lord) Isa the son of Maryam; yet they were commanded to worship but One God. there is no god but He. Praise and glory to Him: (Far is He) from having the partners they associate (with Him)." (at-Tawbah 9/31)

It (the Kalimah) confirms 4 issues:

القصد al-Qasd (inclination): not inclining to anyone other than Allah,

التعظيم at-Ta'dhim (reverence) and المحبة al-Muhabbah (compassion), statement of (Allah) Azza wa Jalla:

{وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ أَشَدُّ حُبّاً لِّلّهِ}

"But those of Faith are overflowing in their love for Allah." (al-Baqarah 2/165)

الخوف al-Khawf (fear) and الرجاء al-Rajah (hope), statement of (Allah) Taala:

{وَإِنْ يَمْسَسْكَ اللَّهُ بِضُرٍّ فَلا كَاشِفَ لَهُ إِلاَّ هُوَ وَإِنْ يُرِدْكَ بِخَيْرٍ فَلا رَادَّ لِفَضْلِهِ يُصِيبُ بِهِ مَنْ يَشَاءُ مِنْ عِبَادِهِ وَهُوَ الْغَفُورُ الرَّحِيمُ}

"If Allah do touch thee with hurt, there is none can remove it but He (i.e., Allah): if He do design some benefit for thee, there is none can keep back His favor: He causeth it to reach whomsoever of His servants He pleaseth. And He is the Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful." (Yunus 10/107)

Whoever knows this, will have cut his relation with other than Allah, and the grim look of
الباطل al-Baatil (falsehood) will have no significance for him. Like the news which Allah informed us of Ibrahim, may the best of the blessings of Allah be upon our Nabi (Muhammad) and him, concerning him breaking the idols and his keeping distant from his tribe:

{قَدْ كَانَتْ لَكُمْ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ فِي إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَالَّذِينَ مَعَهُ إِذْ قَالُوا لِقَوْمِهِمْ إِنَّا بُرَآءُ مِنْكُمْ وَمِمَّا تَعْبُدُونَ مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ كَفَرْنَا بِكُمْ}

"There is for you an excellent example (to follow) in İbrahim and those with him, when they said to their people: We are clear of you and of whatever ye worship besides Allah: we have rejected you." (al-Mumtahinah 60/4)

1- al-Jawahirul Mudiyya, 34-35
Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:

إِنَّ النَّاسَ دَخَلُوا فِي دِينِ اللهِ أَفْوَاجًا، وَسَيَخْرُجُونَ مِنْهُ أَفْوَاجًا

"Verily, the people have entered into the religion of Allah in crowds and they will also leave it in crowds." (Ahmad, Musnad)
