رِسَالَةٌ فِي كَلِمَةِ التَّوْحِيدِ مَعْرِفَةُ شَهَادَةِ أَنْ لاَ إِلٰهَ إِلاَّ اللّٰهُ

-COMPREHENDING THE SHAHDAH (TESTIMONY) OF LA ILAHA ILLALLH-

Muhammad bin Abdil Wahhb Rahimahullh said,

Know that the knowledge of La Ilaha Illallh was made Fardh (obligatory) prior to Salh (prayer) and Sawm (fasting) being Fardh. The necessity of researching the meaning of this (i.e., La Ilaha Illallh) is greater upon the slave than the necessity of researching Salh and Sawm. The prohibition of Shirk (associating partners to Allhu Tal) and having mn (belief) in the Tght is greater than the prohibition of establishing marriage with mothers and grandmothers [aunts].

Shaykh'ul Islm Muhammad bin Abdil Wahhb Rahimahullh

Again, -may Allhu Tal sanctify his soul and brighten his grave- Shaykh'ul Islm Muhammad bin Abdil Wahhb, has a pamphlet with these phrases:

May Allhu Tal have mercy upon you, know that the knowledge of La Ilaha Illallh was made Fardh (obligatory) prior to Salh (prayer) and Sawm (fasting) being Fardh. The necessity of researching the meaning of this (i.e., La Ilaha Illallh) is greater upon the slave than the necessity of researching Salh and Sawm. The prohibition of Shirk (associating partners to Allhu Tal) and having mn (belief) in the Tght is greater than the prohibition of establishing marriage with mothers and grandmothers [aunts][2]. So the greatest level of believing in Allhu Tal is the Shahdah (testimony) of La Ilaha Illallh.

The meaning of the Shahdah of La Ilaha Illallh is that the slave bears witness that al-Ilhiyyah (Divinity) solely belongs to Allh, and that no Nab (Prophet), Malak (angel), or Wal (saint) has a share of it. Rather this is the right of Allhu Tal over His slaves. Al-Ilhiyyah in our time is what they call as-Sir (the secret). In the language of the Arabs, al-Ilah (Mabd; the one who is worshiped) is the one who is called -in our time- as ash-Shaykh and as-Sayyid; whom Du (prayer) is directed to and whom Istighthah (help) is sought from.

When people know this (that the characteristics of Ilah are given to the Shaykh and the Sayyid); they will understand that the belief many have in regards to Sammn [Shamsn][3] or his likes or the graves of some amongst the Sahbah is indeed Ibdah (worship) that is not fitting to direct to other than Allhu Tal, and that whoever has such belief concerning (even) a Nab amongst the Anbiy has become a Kfir and that he makes him (that Nab) an Ilah alongside Allhu Tal, and by this: he will have not testified to La Ilaha Illallh.

The meaning of rejecting the Tght is: to distance from everything that is believed in other than Allh, from a Jinn, a human, a tree, a rock, or other than these, testifying to their Kufr and misguidance, and hating them -even if they are your father and brother.

As for the one who says: I do not worship other than Allhu Tal. Yet, I have no objection to the Sdat[4] and tombs over the graves and the likes.

Then he is a liar in his statement La Ilaha Illallh. Such person has not believed in Allhu Tal and has not rejected the Tght.

These are easy words which necessitate a long/detailed research, great effort to know the Dnul Islm (religion of Islm), knowing the things that Allhu Tal has sent His Rasl Sallallhu Alayhi wa Sallam with, and researching the statements of the Ulam (scholars) concerning the Ayah,

So whoever disbelieves in the Tght and believes in Allh has grasped the unbreakable Urwatul Wuthq (firmest handhold) (al-Baqarah 2/256)

It also necessitates putting great effort in learning the things that Allhu Tal taught His Rasl Sallallhu Alayhi wa Sallam and the things that His Rasl Sallallhu Alayhi wa Sallam taught to his Ummah (nation of Islm) with regards to at-Tawhd (monotheism). Whoever turns away from this, and as a result, Allhu Tal seals his heart and he prefers this Duny (worldly life) over his Dn (religion); Allhu Tal will not excuse him due to his Jahlah (ignorance). Walllhu Alam (Allhu Tal knows the best)!..

ANNOTATIONS
 1. Al-Jawhirul Mudiyyah, 33-34 (inside Majmatur Rasil wal Masilin Najdiyyah, 4/33-34); ad-Durarus Saniyyah, 2/121-122.

 2. In ad-Durarus Saniyyah, the addition in parentheses is found instead of the phrase grandmothers.

 3. In ad-Durarus Saniyyah, the addition in parentheses is found instead of the phrase Sammn.

Sammn/Shamsn is the name of a Shaykh whom the people of Najd used to believe in his Wilyah and used to call upon them during periods of hardship.

 4. In the original text, the word Sdt is used. Nowadays, the characteristics of Ilh are given to those whom are referred to as Sayyid, Sayd, and its likes. Wallhul Mustan!
Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:

إِنَّ النَّاسَ دَخَلُوا فِي دِينِ اللهِ أَفْوَاجًا، وَسَيَخْرُجُونَ مِنْهُ أَفْوَاجًا

"Verily, the people have entered into the religion of Allah in crowds and they will also leave it in crowds." (Ahmad, Musnad)
