Tafsiru Kalimat'it Tawhid
« on: 11.06.2015, 01:07:59 AM »

معنى: لا إله إلا الله
Explanation of the Kalimah of Tawhid

Shaykh'ul Islam Muhammad ibn Abd'il Wahhab, Majmu'at at-Tawhid; ad-Durar as-Saniyya, 2/116-120

(Shaykh Muhammad ibn Abd'il Wahhab) rahimahullaah was asked about the meaning of لا إله إلا الله LailahaillaAllah, so he answered by saying:

Know, may Allah have mercy upon you, that this statement is
الفارقة بين الكفر والإسلام al-Fariqah bayn al-Kufr wa al-Islam (the distinction between Kufr and Islam). It is كلمة التقوى Kalimat at-Taqwaa (the statement of piety) and العروة الوثقى the firmest handhold, as was made by Ibrahim (alayhi salam):

كلمة باقية في عقبة لعلهم يرجعون

And he made it (i.e., La-ilaha illallah) a word lasting among his offspring, that they may turn back (i.e., to repent to Allah or receive admonition). (az-Zukhruf 43/28)

However, what is intended here is not
قولها باللسان مع الجهل بمعناها Qawluha bi'l Lisani maa al-Jahl bi Maanaha (just speech upon the tongue while being ignorant about its meaning). For verily, المنافقين al-Munafiqun (the hypocrites) say La-ilaha illallah, يصلون pray يصومون fast and يتصدقون give in charity, but

وهم تحت الكفار في الدرك الأسفل من النار

they will be below the disbelievers, in the lowest part of the Hell-Fire. (an-Nisa 4/145)

Rather, what is intended is to say the statement while
معرفتها بالقلب Ma'rifatiha bi'l Qalbi (having recognition of it in the heart), محبتها Muhabbataha (loving it) and محبة أهلها Muhabbah Ahliha (loving its people) and having بغض Bughd (hatred) and معاداته enmity to whatever or whoever خالفها Khalfaha (opposes it), as (Rasulullah) sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam said:

من قال لا إله إلا الله مخلصاً

Whoever says Lailaha illaAllah sincerely..., in another narration:

من قلبه خلصاً

. sincerely from his heart, in another narration:

صادقا من قلبه

...truthfully from his heart, and in another Hadith:

من قال لا إله إلا الله، وكفر بما يعبد من دون الله

Whoever says LailahaillaAllah and disbelieves in all that is worshiped besides Allah, as well as many other الأدلة al-Adillah (pl., Dalil; evidences) which الدالة al-Dalalat (indicate) that most people are upon جهالة Jahala (ignorance) of this الشهادة ash-Shahadah (testimony).

So know that this
الكلمة Kalimah (statement) contains a نفي Nafy (negation) and an إثبات Ithbaat (affirmation). Negation of الألوهية worship to other than Allah تبارك وتعالى Tabaraka wa Ta'ala from the creation, even Muhammad (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) and الملائكة al-Ma'laikah (the angels), even جبرائيل Jibril (alayhi salam) and more so others from الأولياء al-Awliya (the saint) and الصالحين al-Salihin (the righteous). So when you have understood this, then contemplate الألوهية al-Uluhiyyah (servitude), which أثبتها الله لنفسه Ithbaat Allah li Nafsihi (Allah has affirmed for Himself) and negated al-Uluhiyyah for Muhammad (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) and Jibril عليهما السلام alayhi salam (peace be upon him) and al-Awliya and al-Salihin, to such an extent that they do not even have an atoms weight of share in it.

Know that this
الألوهية al-Uluhiyyah is what the common people of our time have termed السر al-Sir (the secret) and الولاية al-Wilaayah (the 'allegiance'). And the meaning of الإله al-Ilah (according to them) is الولي the Wali, who possess السر al-Sir (the secret of the unseen) and he is the one they call الفقير al-Faqir (the poor), الشيخ ash-Shaykh and السيد al-Sayyid etc. This is because they think that Allah is pleased with giving to خواص الخلق Khawas al-Khalq (the elite of the creation) a status whereby a person resorts to them with يرجو Raja (hope), يستغيث Istighatha (seeking aid) from them and making them واسطة Wasita (intermediaries) between himself and Allah. So أهل الشرك Ahl Mushrikin (People of Shirk; the Mushrikin) in our time claim that these saints are their وسائط Wasaita (intermediaries), and they call them الأولون، الإله al-Awwalun al-Alihah (the foremost deities) because according to them الواسطة al-Wasita (an intermediary) is الإله an Ilah (deity).

However, when a person says
لا إله إلا الله Lailaha illallah (there is nog od deserves to be worshiped but Allah), then this إبطال للوسائط Ibtaal Wasaait (negates their intermediaries) and in order to have a complete understanding of this, you must know the following two issues:

The first: That you know that those
الكفار al-Kuffar (the disbelievers) whom Nabi (the Prophet) sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam fought, killed, captured their wealth and permitted taking of their wives, used to affirm توحيد الربوبية Tawhid ar-Rububiyyah for Allah, which is that none خلق creates, رزق sustains, حيي gives life, ميت brings about death and دبر manages the affairs except Allah alone, as He Ta'ala says:

قل من يرزقكم من السماء والأرض أمن يملك السمع والأبصار ومن يخرج الحي من الميت ويخرج الميت من الحي ومن يدبر الأمر فسيقولون الله فقل أفلا تتقون

Say: Who provides for you from the sky and from the earth? Or who owns hearing and sight? And who brings out the living from the dead and brings out the dead from the living? And who disposes the affairs? They will say: Allah. Say: Will you not then be afraid of Allah's Punishment (for setting up rivals in worship with Allah)?" (Yunus 10/31)

This is a great and important issue, since
الكفار al-Kuffar (the disbelievers) used to affirm and accept all of the above but despite that, it did not cause them to enter  الإسلام Islam and (it did not) cause their blood or wealth to be unlawful. They also يتصدقون gave charity and abandoned المحرمات al-Muharaamat (the prohibited acts) due to fear of Allah عزَّ وجلَّ (the One free from all imperfections, the Most High), but:

The second issue is: That which caused them to be disbelievers and caused their blood and wealth to be permissible was the fact that they did not affirm
توحيد الألوهية Tawhid al-Uluhiyyah for Allah, which is يدعى Dua (to supplicate) and يرجى Raja (hope in) إلا الله وحده لا شريك له Illlallah Wahdahu la Sharika lah (Allah alone without any partners); and not يستغاث Istighatha (to seek help), ذبح Thabh (sacrifice) and نذر Nazr (vow) to anyone other than Him, neither لملك مقرب Malak Muqarrab (an angel brought near) nor نبي مرسل Nabi Mursal (a prophet sent), for whoever does استغاث Istighatha to others (than Allah) has كفر Kufr (disbelieved); for whoever does ذبح Thabh to others (than Allah) has كفر Kufr (disbelieved); for whoever does نذر Nazr to others (than Allah) has كفر Kufr (disbelieved).

The completion of this is to know that
المشركين al-Mushrikin (the Mushrikin) whom Rasulullah sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam fought used to يدعون Dua (call upon the), (righteous like) الملائكةal-Malaikah (the angels),
عيسى Isa (alayhi salam), عزيراً Uzayr and other الأولياء al-Awliya and this was the reason for their كفر Kufr (disbelief) to Allah, despite their إقرار Iqraar (affirmation) of the fact that Allah is الخالق al-Khaliq (the Creator), الرازق al-Razzaq (the Sustainer) and المدبر val-Mudabbir (the Disposer of all the affairs).

When you know this, then you will understand the meaning of
لا إله إلا الله La-ilaha illallah and you will understand that the one who نخا calls upon نبيا Nabiyyan (a prophet) or ملكا Malakan (an angel) or ندب places his trust in them or استغاث Istighatha (seeks help) from them, has left the fold of الإسلامal-Islam. This is الكفر al-Kufr (the Kufr) for which Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam fought (with them).

So if one of
المشركين al-Mushrikin (the Mushrikin; the polytheists) were to say: We know that Allah is الخالق al-Khaliq (the Creator), الرازق al-Razzaq (the Sustainer) and المدبر al-Mudabbir (the Disposer), however these الصالحين al-Salihin (righteous) people may be مقربون Muqarrabun (close to Allah), so we دعو supplicate, نذر Nazr (vow), ستغيث ıstighatha (seek help) and approach them, because we need them for influence and الشفاعة ash-Shafaah (intercession). Otherwise we understand that Allah is al-Khaliq (the Creator), الرازق al-Razzaq (the Sustainer) and المدبر al-Mudabbir (the Disposer). Then say to them: This saying of yours is دين al-Din (the religion) of أبي جهل Abu Jahl and his likes, since they used to دعو Dua (call upon) عيسى Isa (alayhi salam), عزيراً Uzayr, الملائكة al-Malaikah (the angels) and الأولياء al-Awliya while intending the same thing. As (Allah quoted,) they said:

مانعبدهم إلا ليقربونا إلى الله زلفى

We worship them only that they may bring us near to Allah. (az-Zumar 39/3);

ويعبدون من دون الله مالا يضرهم ولا ينفعهم ويقولون هؤلاء شفعاؤنا عند الله

And they worship besides Allah; things that hurt them not, nor profit them, and they say: These are our intercessors with Allah! (Yunus 10/18)

So when you fully contemplate this and you recognize that the Kuffar affirmed
[size=148t]توحيد الربوبية
Tawhid ar-Rububiyyah for Allah which is; بالخلق، والرزق، والتدبير oneness in creating, sustaining and disposing the affairs while they ينخون called upon (the creation); Isa (alayhi salam), al-Malaikah (the angels) and al-Awliya (saints) for يقربو Qurb (nearness) and يشفعونShafaah (intercession) with Allah and that they, particularly النصارى al-Nasara (the Christians), have amongst them people who perform acts of worship night and day, abstain from the world, give in charity all their worldly possessions while living in seclusion from the people in monasteries, but despite this they are disbelievers, عدو لله enemies of Allah eternally in النار an-Naar (the Fire; Hellfire) due to their اعتقاد I'tiqad (belief) in Isa (alayhi salam) and other Awliya whom they دعو call upon, يذبح sacrifice and نذر vow for.

So when you understand all this then the description of Islam and the call of your Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam will become clear and you will realize that many people are detached from it. And you will clearly understand the meaning of his sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam saying:

بدأ الإسلام غريباً، وسيعود غريبا كما بدأ

Islam began as a stranger and it will return as a stranger as it began

So by Allah, O
إخواني Ikhwaan (my brothers), cling to أصل دين Asl'ud Din (the foundation of your Din), the first and the last of it, its foundation and its head: شهادة أن لاإله إلا الله Shahadah an La-ilaha illallah (the testimony that none has the right to be worshiped except Allah).

Know its meaning,
أحبوا أهلها Uhibba Ahliha (love its people) and واجعلوهم إخوانكم Ajalu min Ikhwaanahum (make them your brothers) even if they are far away. And اكفروا بالطواغيت Akfarı Tawaghit (disbelieve in the Tawaghit; pl., Taghout), have عادو enmity towards them and وابغضوا من أحبهم hate those who love them, جادل Jadal (argue) on their behalf, do not كفر disbelieve in them or say: ماعلي منه I have nothing against them or say:
ماكلفني الله بهم Allah has not made me responsible for them. Then verily, they have forged a lie against Allah, since Allah has made them كلف responsible and فرض Fard (obligated) them to disbelieve in them (i.e., the Tawaghit) and البراءة al-Baraah (dissociate) themselves from them, even if they are their brothers or children. So by Allah, cling to this أصل دين Asl'ud Din (the foundation of your Din) in order that you may meet your رب Rabb (Lord) without شرك Shirk (associating) anything with (Allah). اللهم توفنا مسلمين، وألحقنا بالصالحين O Allah cause us to die as Muslims and join us with the righteous.

And we finish our discussion with an Ayah (verse) mentioned by Allah in His
كتاب Kitaab (Book i.e., Qur'an), which will clarify to you that كفر the Kufr of المشركين the Mushrikin of أهل زماننا Ahl Zamanan (our time) is أعظم Azim (more severe) than the Kufr of those whom Rasulullah sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam fought. (Allah) Ta'ala says:

وإذا مسكم الضر في البحر ضل من تدعون إلا إياه

And when harm touches you upon the sea, those that you call upon besides Him vanish from you except Him (Allah Alone). (al-Isra 17/67)

So you have heard that Allah
تعالى Ta'ala (the One free from all imperfections, the Most High) has mentioned that when الكفار the Kuffar were in الضر al-Dar (distress) they would abandon their السادات leaders and المشائخal-Mashayikh (pl., Shaykh; scholars) do not call upon them and not seek help through them. Rather, they showed يخلصون لله وحده، لا شريك له Yakhlisu Wahdahu la Sharika lah (sincerity to Allah alone, without associating any partners) and يستغيثون ıstighatha (sought aid from Him) alone. However when الرخاءrelief and ease came, they would commit أشركوا Shirk again. You can see that when المشركين al-Mushrikin (the Mushrikin) of  أهل زماننا our times, some of whom claim to be أهل العلم Ahl'ul Ilm (people of knowledge), possessing زهد
Zuhd (asceticism) and اجتهاد Ijtihaad (striving hard), and عبادة Abad (worshipers) are in الضر distress they begin to seek يستغيث Istigahtha (help) from other than Allah like معروف Ma'ruf or عبد القادر الجيلاني Abd'ul Qadir al-Jilani or those greater than them like, : زيد بن الخطاب Zayd ibn al-Khattab (radiyallahu anh) and الزبير al-Zubayr (radiyallahu anh) or those who are greater than them like Rasulullah sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam, and فالله المستعان fa Allah al-Musta'an (help is sought from Allah). And more severe and disastrous than this is the fact that they يستغيثون seek help from الطواغيتal-Tawaghit (pl., Taghout); الكفرة al-Kuffar (the disbelievers) and المردة al-Murtad (the apostates) like شمسان Shamsaan, إدريس Idris (also called al-Ashqar), يوسف Yusuf and their likes. والله أعلم Wallahu A'lam (Allah knows best)!..

Praise be to Him (Allah) in the beginning and the end and may peace and blessing of Allah be upon the best of creation, Muhammad, his family and his Companions."
Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:

إِنَّ النَّاسَ دَخَلُوا فِي دِينِ اللهِ أَفْوَاجًا، وَسَيَخْرُجُونَ مِنْهُ أَفْوَاجًا

"Verily, the people have entered into the religion of Allah in crowds and they will also leave it in crowds." (Ahmad, Musnad)
