Chapter on what Came Regarding the Two-Faced Person

The statement of Allâh Ta’âlâ in the Âyah,

“When they meet those who believe, they say: “We believe;””1 (al-Baqarah 2/14)

And He Ta’âlâ’s statement in the Âyah,

“(They are) distracted in mind even in the midst of it.”2 (an-Nisâ 4/143)

It is narrated from both of them (al-Bukhârî and Muslim) from Abû Hurayrah (Radiyallâhu Anh) in a Marfû Hadîth,

“You will find that the worst of people (in the sight of Allâh) are the two-faced people who come to these people with one those with another face.” (al-Bukhârî, 6058; Muslim, 2526)

It is narrated from Anas (Radiyallâhu Anh) in a Marfû Hadîth,

“He who is two-faced (in this world), Allâh will make him two tongues of fire on Yawm’ul Qiyâmah (the Day of Resurrection).” (narrated from another Sahâbah named Ammâr bin Yâsir in Abû Dâwûd, 4873)

“When they meet those who believe, they say: “We believe;” but when they are alone with their evil ones, they say: “We are really with you: We (were) only jesting.”” (al-Baqarah 2/14)

2- The Âyah in full reads,

“(They are) distracted in mind even in the midst of it,- being (sincerely) for neither one group nor for another whom Allâh leaves straying,- never wilt thou find for him the way.” (an-Nisâ 4/143)

Chapter on what Came Regarding Calumny

The statement of Allâh Ta’âlâ,

“A slanderer, going about with calumnies.” (al-Qalam 68/11)

It is narrated from Hudhayfah (Radiyallâhu Anh) in a Marfû Hadîth,

“The calumniator (tale-bearer) will not enter Jannah (Paradise).” (Muslim Hadîth no. 105)

It is narrated from both of them (al-Bukhârî and Muslim) in the Hadîth of “al-Qabrayn (the two-graves)”,

“Verily, they are not being punished for a great thing (in the people’s sight): indeed it (their sins) are great (in the sight of Allâh). As for one of them, he did not free himself from (being soiled) with urine. As for the other, he would go about with calumnies (to make enmity between friends).” (al-Bukhârî, Hadîth no. 218, 1361; Muslim, Hadîth no. 292)

It is narrated from Muslim from Ibnu Mas’ûd (Radiyallâhu Anh) in a Marfû Hadîth,

“Should I inform you what slandering is? It is calumny: tale-carrying between people.” (Muslim, Hadîth no. 2606)
Shaykh'ul Islâm Ibnu Taymiyyah Rahimahullâh stated,

"The Âlim (scholar) recognizes the Jâhil (ignorant) since he was once a Jâhil. The Jâhil does not recognize the Âlim since he has never been an Âlim." (Shaykh'ul Islâm Ibnu Taymiyyah, Majmû'ul Fatâwâ, 13/235)

Chapter on what Came Regarding Slandering

The statement of Allâh Ta’âlâ in the Âyah,

“And those who annoy believing men and women...1 (al-Ahzâb 33/58)

It is narrated from Ibnu Umar (Radiyallâhu Anhumâ) in a Marfû Hadîth,

“Whoever makes an untruthful accusation against a Mu’min (believer), Allâh will abide him in “Radghat’ul Khabâl” until he retracts his statement.” [It was said, “O Rasûlullâh! What is “Radghat’ul Khabâl”?” He said, “The drippings of Ahl’un Nâr (the people of the fire, i.e. Jahannam).”2]3 Abû Dâwûd narrated it with its Sanad (chain of narration).

It is narrated from Muslim from Abû Hurayrah (Radiyallâhu Ta’âlâ Anh) in a Marfû Hadîth,

“Do you know what is backbiting?” They (the Sahâbah) said: “Allâh and His Rasûl know best.” He (Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam) said, “Mentioning your brother by that which he does not like.” It was said, “Even if what I say is (actually) in my brother?” He said, “If what you say is (actually) found in him, then you have backbitten him, and if what you say is not found in him, then you have slandered him.” (Muslim, Hadîth no: 2589)

“And those who annoy believing men and women undeservedly, bear (on themselves) a calumny and a glaring sin” (al-Ahzâb 33/58)

2- Al-Awzâ’î (Rahimahullâh) stated that “Radghat’ul Khabâl” is “The pus of Ahl’un Nâr.” (at-Tabarânî, Mu’jam’ul Kabîr, Hadîth no: 14550)

3- The first part of the Hadîth is narrated in Abû Dâwûd, Hadîth no: 3597. We were not able to find the Hadîth as narrated by the Mu’allif. However, the portion in parantheses is narrated in a seperate Hadîth in Ibnu Mâjah, Hadîth no: 3377. In another Nushah (copy) of the book the portion in parantheses is not found. Wallâhu A’lam.

Chapter on what Came Regarding Cursing

It is narrated from Abû’d Dardâ Radiyallâhu Taâlâ Anh in a Marfû Hadîth,

“When a servant curses anything, the curse goes up to the Samâ (heaven), thus the gates of the Samâ (heaven) are locked against it. Then it comes down to the Ardh (earth), so the gates of the Ardh are locked against it. Then it goes right and left: when it finds no place of entrance it returns to the thing which was cursed, and if it deserves what was said (it enters it), otherwise it returns to the one who uttered it.” (Abû Dâwûd, Hadîth no. 4905)

Abû Dâwûd narrated it with a Jayyid (good) Sanad (chain of narration). It also has a witness with Ahmad in a Hasan (good) Sanad from the Hadîth of Ibnu Mas’ûd. Abû Dâwûd and other than him also recorded it from the Hadîth of Ibnu Mas’ûd: its narration is Thiqât (reliable); however, it is defected by transmission.

It is narrated from Muslim from Abû Barzah Radiyallâhu Anh in a Marfû Hadîth that a women cursed her she-camel. So Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said,

“The she-camel that has been cursed should not accompany us.” (Muslim, Hadîh no. 48, with slightly different wording, 47, 2595, 3006-3014)

It is also narrated from him (Muslim) from Imrân and others.

Chapter on the Prohibition on Interceeding in the Hudûd (pl. of Hadd; Punishment Prescribed by the Sharî’ah)

And the statement of Allâhu Taâlâ in the Âyah,

“Let not compassion move you in their case, in a matter prescribed by Allâh” (an-Nûr 24/2)

It is narrated from both of them (al-Bukhârî and Muslim) in the Hadîth of Khuzaymah,

“Do you intercede in a Hadd (prescribed punishment) from amongst the Hudûd of Allâh?” (al-Bukhârî, Hadîth no: 3475; Muslim, Hadîth no: 1688)

And it is narrated in the Muwatta (of Imâm Mâlik) from az-Zubayr (Radiyallâhu Anh):

“When the case reaches the ruler (and he inflects a prescribed punishment based on the apparent evidence), Allâh will curse the intercessor and the one for whom he intercedes.” (al-Muwatta, version of Abd’ul Bâqî, 2/835; version of al-A’dhamî, 5/1221; version of Abû Mus’ab az-Zuhrî, 2/43)

It is also narrated from Ibnu Umar (Radiyallâhu Anh) in a Marfû Hadîth,

“Whoever’s intercession becomes as an obstacle to one of the punishments prescribed by Allâh being enacted, then he has opposed Allâh in His command.” (Abû Dâwûd, Hadîth no: 3597)
Shaykh'ul Islâm Ibnu Taymiyyah Rahimahullâh stated,

"The Âlim (scholar) recognizes the Jâhil (ignorant) since he was once a Jâhil. The Jâhil does not recognize the Âlim since he has never been an Âlim." (Shaykh'ul Islâm Ibnu Taymiyyah, Majmû'ul Fatâwâ, 13/235)

Chapter on the One who Assists in a Dispute Unjustly

The statement of Allâhu Taâlâ in the Âyah,

“Help ye one another in righteousness and piety, but help ye not one another in sin and rancor…” (al-Mâ’idah 5/2)

Also His statement in the Âyah,

“Whoever interceded in a good cause becomes a partner therein: And whoever recommends and helps an evil cause, shares in its burden…” (an-Nisâ 4/86)

It is narrated from Ibnu Umar Radiyallâhu Anhumâ in a Marfû Hadîth,

“If anyone’s intercession intervenes as an obstacle to one of the punishments from the punishments prescribed by Allâh, he has opposed Allâh in His command. Whoever disputes unjustly knowing that it is false, he remains in the displeasure of Allâh until he abstains from it. And whoever says something regarding a Muslim which is not found in him, he will be imprisoned in “Radghat’ul Khabâl” until he retracts his statement.” It was said, “O Rasûlullâh! What is “Radghat’ul Khabâl”?” He said, “The drippings of Ahl’un Nâr (the people of the fire, i.e. Jahannam).” (Abû Dâwûd with slight differences in wording, Hadîth no: 3597)

And in another narration,

“And whoever assists in a dispute unjustly, he has drawn the wrath of Allâh upon himself.” (Abû Dâwûd with slight differences in wording, Hadîth no: 3597-3598)

Abû Dâwûd narrated it with a Sahîh (sound) Sanad (chain of narration).

It is narrated from Ibnu Umar Radiyallâhu Anhuhmâ in a Marfû Hadîth,

It was narrated by Abû Dâwûd.

It was also narrated from him (Abû Dâwûd), from Abû Hurayrah Radiyallâhu Anh in a Marfû Hadîth,

Chapter on Boasting

The statement of Allâhu Taâlâ in the Âyah,

“I am better than he.”1 (al-A’râf 7/12)

It is narrated from Iyâdh bin Himâr Radiyallâhu Anh in a Marfû Hadîth,

“Verily, Allâhu Ta’âlâ has revealed to me that you should behave humbly, so that nobody should be haughty over the other, and that nobody should transgress against another.” (Muslim, Hadîth no: 2865)

It was narrated by Muslim.

It was also narrated from him, from Abû Mâlik al-Ash’arî that he said: Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said,

“There are four matters in my Ummah (nation) that are from the matters of Jâhiliyyah (pre-lslâmic days of ignorance) which the people will not leave: Boasting of ancestry, slandering the lineage (of others), Istisqâ (seeking rain) by the stars, and wailing over the dead.”

He Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said, “If the wailing woman does not repent before she dies, she will be made to stand on Yawm’ul Qiyâmah (the Day of Resurrection) while wearing a dress of tar and an armour of mange.” (Muslim, Hadîth no: 934)

And it is narrated in at-Tirmidhî, and he graded it Hasan (good),

“People should stop boasting about their fathers who have died, however, they (their fathers) are the charcoal of Jahannam (Hell), or they will certainly be more humiliated with Allâh than the dung beetle. Verily, Allâh has removed the “Ubbiyyah” of Jâhiliyyah and its boasting about lineage from you. (Indeed, a person is either) a Muttaqî (pious) Mu’min (believer), or a Shaqî (miserable) Fâjir (sinner). People are the children of Âdam, and Âdam was created from dust.” (at-Tirmidhî, Hadîth no: 3955)

“Ubbiyyah” with Tashdîd of the Bâ while it carrying a Kasrah is pride and boasting.

Quote
Footnotes:

1 Allâhu Ta’âlâ states,

“It is We Who created you and gave you shape; then We bade the angels prostrate to Âdam, and they prostrated; not so Iblîs; He refused to be of those who bow down. (Allâh) said: “What prevented thee from bowing down when I commanded thee?” He said: “I am better than he: Thou didst create me from fire, and him from clay.”” (al-A’râf 7/11-12)

Chapter on Slandering the Lineage (of others)

It is narrated from Abû Hurayrah Radiyallâhu Anh in a Marfû Hadîth,

“Two (things) are found among people which are tantamount to Kufr for those who indulge in them: slandering the lineage (of others) and wailing over the dead.” (Muslim, Hadîth no: 67)

Chapter on the One Who Claims an Ancestry which is not His

It is narrated from both of them (i.e. al-Bukhârî and Muslim) from Sa’d (bin Abî Waqqâs) Radiyallâhu Anh in a Marfû Hadîth,

“Whoever claims (to be from) other than his father while he knows that he is not his father; then Jannah is forbidden (for him).” (al-Bukhârî, Hadîth no: 6766; Muslim, Hadîth no: 63)

It is narrated from both of them from Abû Hurayrah Radiyallâhu Anh from the Nabî Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam,

“Do not deny your fathers, (i.e. claim to be the sons of persons other than your fathers), for he who denies his (biological) father is a Kâfir.” (al-Bukhârî, Hadîth no: 6768; Muslim, Hadîth no: 62)

It is also narrated from both of them, from Alî (bin Abî Tâlib) Radiyallâhu Anh narrated in a Marfû Hadîth,

“Whoever claims to (be the son of) other than his father, (or claims to be) attached to other than his clientele; then upon him is the curse of Allâh, the angels, and all of humanity. On Yawm’ul Qiyâmah (the Day of Judgement), Allâh will not accept any repentance/obligatory acts or ransom/supererogatory acts from him.” (Muslim, Hadîth no: 1370)

Chapter on the One Who Denies His Lineage

It is narrated from Amr bin Shu’ayb from his father from his grandfather in a Marfû Hadîth,

“The one who denies his lineage -even if he is accurate- or claims an unknown ancestry has committed Kufr (disbelieved).”

At-Tabarâni also narrated something similar in meaning in the Hadîth of Abû Bakr as-Siddîq Radiyallâhu Anh (al-Mu’jam’ul Awsat, Hadîth no: 8575).

Abû Dâwûd and Ibnu Hibbân have (narrated) from Abû Hurayrah Radiyallâhu anh in a Marfû Hadîth,

“Any woman who includes to her family one who does not belong to it, then she has nothing to do with Allâh (i.e. expects no mercy from Allâh), and Allâh will not enter her into His Jannah (paradise). And no man denies his son while looking at him (knowing that he is his biological son), except that Allâh will veil Himself from him on Yawm’ul Qiyâmah (the Day of Judgement), and Allâh will expose him in front of the creation, from their first to their last.” (an-Nasâî, Hadîth no. 3481; Abû Dâwûd Hadîth no. 2263; Ibnu Hibbân Hadîth no. 4108)
Shaykh'ul Islâm Ibnu Taymiyyah Rahimahullâh stated,

Chapter on the One Who Claims what is not His, and the One Who Transgresses in Quarrels

Regarding this is the Hadîth of Ibn Umar Radiyallâhu Anhumâ, and it was also narrated from Ibn Mas’ûd and Umar Radiyallâhu Anhumâ:

“Whoever Claims: I am a (perfect) Mu’min is certainly a Kâfir. And whoever says that he is (surely) in Jannah (paradise), then he is in the Nâr (fire; hellfire). And whoever says that he is an Âlim (scholar), then he is a Jâhil (ignorant).” (Ibnu Kathîr, Tafsîr, 2/332 an-Nisâ 4/39; Ibnu Kathîr, Musnad’ul Fârûq, 2/574; with similar narration: at-Tabarânî, Mu’jam’us Saghîr, 1/120)

It is narrated from both of them (i.e. al-Bukhârî and Muslim) on the authority of Abû Dharr Radiyallâhu Anh that he heard Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam saying,

“There is nothing except Kufr for the one who knowingly claims the one who is not his father as his father. And whoever claims that which is not his is not from us, then he should get ready for his seat in the Nâr. And there is nothing for the one who accuses a Muslim with Kufr (declares Takfîr and says that he is a Kâfir) or calls him, “O Aduwwullâh (enemy of Allâh)!” while he is not except that his statement returns to him.” (slightly different wording an-Nawawî, Riyâdh’us Sâlihîn, 1805; al-Bukhârî, al-Adab’ul Mufrad, 433)

Chapter on Claiming Ilm (Sacred-Knowledge) with Pride

It is narrated from Ibnu Umar Radiyallâhu Anhumâ in a Marfû Hadîth,

“Islâm will manifest until the merchants branch off across the seas and until the horses wade into water (fighting) in the cause of Allâh. Then, a group of people who recite the Qur’ân will appear and say, “Who can recite better than us? Who knows better than us? Who is more knowledgeable (in religion) than us?” Then he Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said, “Is there any good in these people?” They (the companions) said, “Allâh and His Messenger know best.” He Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said, “These people are from amongst you -from amongst this Ummah (Nation)- and these people are the fuel of an-Nâr (fire; hellfire).”

Al-Bazzâr narrated this with a fine Sanad (chain). And at-Tabarânî narrated something with the same meaning from Ibnu Abbâs Radiyallâhu Anhumâ. Al-Mundhirî said, “Its Isnâd (chain of narration) is Hasan (good)”.

Chapter on the Mention of Being Ungrateful

It is narrated in as-Sahîh from Ibnu Abbâs Radiyallâhu Anhumâ in a Marfû Hadîth that the Nabî Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said,

“I entered the Nâr (Hell-fire), and I saw that the majority of its people were women who were ungrateful.” It was said, “Do they disbelieve in Allâh?” He Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said, “No, They are ungrateful to their companions and are ungrateful for the good done to them. If you had been good to one of them for a long time and then she sees something from you which she dislikes, she would say, “I never saw anything good from you!” (With similar wording in al-Bukhârî, Hadîth no. 29, 1052, 5197; Muslim, Hadîth no. 907)

It is also narrated from Abû Hurayrah Radiyallâhu Anh in a Marfû Hadîth,

“The one who does not thank people will not thank Allâh” (Abû Dâwûd, Hadîth no. 4811; with similar wording in at-Tirmîdhî, Hadîth no. 1954, 1955)

At-Tirmidhî graded it Sahîh (sound), and he said that it is “Hasan Gharîb (a good Hadîth that is strange to come from this chain of narration)”.

It is also narrated from Jâbir Radiyallâhu Anh in a Marfû Hadîth,

“Whoever is given something, he should offer (a similar thing in return) if he has the means. And whoever does not have the means, then he should praise him; for verily praising is being grateful. Thus, if he has praised him; then he has been grateful. And whoever withholds praising him; then he has been ungrateful.” (With similar wording in at-Tirmîdhî, Hadîth no. 2034; Abû Dâwûd, Hadîth no. 4813).

Chapter on what Came Regarding Criticizing the People who Obey Allâh and Making Fun of Their Weakness

It is narrated from Ibn Mas’ûd Radiyallâhu Anh that he said,

“When the Âyah (verse) of Sadaqah (charity) was revealed, we used to we used to carry loads on our backs (to earn something that we could give away in charity). So a man came and gave a large amount in charity. So the people said, “(He is) a hypocrite!” Another man came and gave a Sâ (four handfuls; about 2.175kg.) in charity. So the people said, “Indeed Allah is not in need of one Sâ!” So the statement of Allâhu Taâlâ was revealed,

“Those who criticize the contributors among the believers concerning (their) charities and (criticize) the ones who find nothing (to spend) except their effort…”[1] (at-Tawbah 9/79)” (with similar wording in al-Bukhârî, Hadîth no. 1415, 4668; Muslim, 1018)
 1. The Âyah in full reads,

“Those who criticize the contributors among the believers concerning (their) charities and (criticize) the ones who find nothing (to spend) except their effort, so they mock at them (believers), Allâh will throw back their mockery on them, and they shall have a painful torment.” (at-Tawbah 9/79)”

And the statement of Allâhu Taâlâ,

“Verily! (During the worldly life,) those who committed crimes used to laugh at those who believed. And when they passed by them, they used to wink one to another (in mockery).” (al-Mutaffifîn 83/29-30)

And His statement in the Âyah,

“But you took them in mockery…” (Mu’minûn 23/110)[1]

And His statement in the Âyah,

“O you who believe! Let not a group ridicule another group…” (Hujurât 49/11)[2]

It is narrated from al-Hasan (al-Basrî) Radiyallâhu anh that Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said,

“Verily, a door in Jannah (paradise) will be opened in the Âkhirah (hereafter) for one of those who ridicule people. It will be said to him, “Come!” and he will come (towards it) with grief and anxiety. So when he reaches it, the door will close without him (entering it). Then another door will be opened for him, and it will be said to him “Come! Come!” and he will come (towards it) with grief and anxiety. Thus when he reaches it, the door will close without him (entering it). This will continue in that manner until one of them (the angels) open a door from amongst the doors of Jannah for him. Thereupon, it will be said to him, “Come!” he will not come to it because of sorrow.” (with similar wording, al-Bayhaqî Shu’ab’ul Îmân, 6333)

It is also narrated by Ibnu Abî Hâtim and others from Ibnu Umar Radiyallâhu Anh in a Marfû Hadîth,

“On Yawm’ul Qiyâmah (the Day of Resurrection), the sign of the one who dies in a state of slandering, criticizing, and giving nicknames to people will be Allâh branding him on his nose from both sides of his mouth.” (Ibnu Abî Hâtim Tafsîr, Hadîth no. 18946; at-Tabarânî, al-Mu’jam’ul Awsat Hadîth no. 8801; al-Mu’jam’ul Kabîr, Hadîth no. 14743)
 1. The Âyah in full reads,

“But you took them in mockery, to the point that they made you forget My remembrance, and you used to laugh at them.” (Mu’minûn 23/110)
 2. The Âyah in full reads,

“O you who believe! Let not a group ridicule another group; perhaps they may be better than them, nor let women ridicule (other) women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by (offensive) nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after (one’s) faith. And whosoever does not repent, then such are the Dhâlimûn (pl. Dhâlim; wrong-doers).” (Mu’minûn 23/110)

Chapter on Frightening a Muslim

It is narrated from Abd’ur Rahmân bin Abî Laylâ that he said: The Ashâb (companions) of Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam narrated to us that they were travelling with the Nabî Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam. A man amongst them slept, so one of them went with a rope he had with him and seized him. Thereupon, he became terrified. So Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said,

“Verily, it is not Halâl (permissible) for a Muslim to frighten his brother (in religion).” (Abû Dâwûd, Hadîth no. 5004)
Shaykh'ul Islâm Ibnu Taymiyyah Rahimahullâh stated,

It is narrated from both of them (i.e., al-Bukhârî and Muslim) on the authority of Asmâ Radiyallâhu Anhâ that a women said, “O Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam! Verily, I have a co-wife; so would there be any sin on me if I were to boast of (receiving something from) my husband which he has not given me (in order to tease her)?” He Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said,

“Verily, the one who boasts regarding (possessing) something that he has not been given is just like one who wears the garment of Zûr (falsehood).” (al-Bukhârî, Hadîth no. 5219; Muslim, Hadîth no. 2129-2130)

It is narrated from both of them (i.e., al-Bukhârî and Muslim) on the authority of Abû Hurayrah Radiyallâhu Anh in a Marfû Hadîth,

“All of my Ummah (nation) will be forgiven, except for the Mujâhirîn (pl. Mujâhir; those who openly commit sins or disclose their sins to the people). For verily, from al-Mujâharah (openly committing sins) is that a man performs a deed (of disobedience) during the night, then wakes up -while Allâh had covered the sin- saying, “O so-and-so!” I committed such-and-such action (of disobedience) yesterday!” He had spent the night while His Rabb (Lord) covered him, and he enters upon the morning removing the cover of Allâh upon him.” (al-Bukhârî, Hadîth no. 6069; Muslim, Hadîth no. 2990)

Chapter on the Negation of Taking an Oath by a Religion Other than Islâm

It is narrated on the authority of Abû Zayd Radiyallâhu Anh that he said: Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said,

“Whoever takes an oath -while intentionally lying- by a religion other than Islâm; then he is as he has said.” (al-Bukhârî, Hadîth no: 1364; Muslim, Hadîth no: 110)

Both of them (i.e. al-Bukhârî and Muslim) narrated it.

It is also narrated on the authority of Buraydah Radiyallâhu Anh that Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said,

“Whoever takes an oath saying, “(… then) I am free from Islâm”; if he is lying, then he is as he said, and if he is truthful, then he will not return to Islâm soundly.” (Abû Dâwûd, Hadîth no: 3258; an-Nasâ’î, Hadîth no: 3772; Ibnu Mâjah, Hadîth no: 2100)

Chapter on what came Regarding Backbiting

The statement of Allâhu Ta’âlâ in the Âyah,

“(…) and do not backbite one another.” (al-Hujurât 49/12)

It is narrated on the authority of Abû Bakrah Radiyallâhu Anh that Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said in the Khutbah (religious sermon) on Yawm’un Nahr (the Day of Sacrifice),

“Which month is this?” We kept silent thinking that he would name it with a name other than its original name. He Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said, “Is it not Dhû’l Hijjah?” We said, “Of course.” He said, “Thereafter, which town is this?” We kept silent thinking that he would name it with a name other than its original name. So he Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said, “Is it not the Sacred City of Allâh?” We said, “Of course.” He then asked, “Which day is it?” We kept silent thinking that he would name it with a name other than its original name. He Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said, “Is it not the Yawm’un Nahr?” We said, “Of course.” He Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said, “Indeed, your blood, wealth, and your honor are Harâm, just like the sacredness of this day of yours, in this month of yours, in this land of yours. You shall meet your Rabb (Lord), and He will ask you about your deeds. Beware! Do not revert as Kuffâr, some striking the necks of others after my death! Beware! The present one should preach this to the one who is not present, for it may be that the one who is not present will comprehend it better than some of those who were present.” Then he Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said, “Have I preached (this message)?” We said, “Yes.” He said, “O Allâh! Be a witness” He Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said this thrice.” (al-Bukhârî, Hadîth no. 1741, 1742, 4406, 5550, 6043, 7447; Muslim, Hadîth no. 1679)

Both of them (i.e. al-Bukhârî and Muslim) narrated it.

It is also narrated from both of them (i.e. al-Bukhârî and Muslim) on the authority of Ibnu Umar Radiyallâhu Anhumâ in a Marfû Hadîth that Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said,

“The Muslim is the one whom the Muslimûn are free from his tongue and hands, and the Muhâjir (emigrant) is the one who migrates away from what Allâh prohibits.” (al-Bukhârî, Hadîth no. 10; Muslim, Hadîth no. 41)

It is narrated on the authority of Abû Hurayrah Radiyallâhu Anh in a Marfû Hadîth (that Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said),

“Whoever eats the flesh of his brother in this Dunyâ (i.e. backbites him), he will be made close to him on the Day of Judgment, and it will be said to him, “Eat him while he is dead as you ate him while he was alive.” So he will eat him, and he will frown and will scream.” (at-Tabarânî, al-Mu’jam’ul Awsat, Hadîth no. 1656; al-Haythamî, Majma’u’z Zawâ’id, Hadîth no. 13129)

Abû Ya’lâ narrated it with a Hasan (good) chain.

It was narrated by Ibnu Hibbân –and he said it was Sahîh (authentic)- in the story of Mâ’iz that A man said to another, “Look at this man who Allâh concealed, however, he could not stop himself until he was stoned like a dog being stoned!” So the Nabî Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said to both of them,

“Both of you eat from the corpse of this donkey as you calumniated regarding this man. For verily, what you calumniated is more severe (in sin) than eating this (donkeys) corpse.” (Ibnu Hibbân, Hadîth no. 1399)

It is narrated from both of them (i.e. al-Bukhârî and Muslim) on the authority of Ibnu Abbâs Radiyallâhu Anhumâ that the Nabî Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam passed by two graves, so he said,

“Verily, both of them are being punished, but they are not being punished because of a big (sin). As for one of them, he did not free himself from urine. As for the other, he used to walk around tale-carrying.” (al-Bukhârî, Hadîth no. 216, 218, 1361, 1378, 6052, 6055; Muslim, Hadîth no. 292)

Al-Bukhârî narrated a similar narration from Jâbir Radiyallâhu Anh in “al-Adab’ul Mufrad”, and it contains,

“As for the first, he used to backbite people.” (al-Adab’ul Mufrad, Hadîth no. 735)

Ahmad has a Hadîth with the same meaning from Abû Bakrah with a Sahîh (authentic) chain, and Abû Dâwûd at-Tayâlisî narrated something similar on the authority of Ibnu Abbâs Radiyallâhu Anhumâ with a Jayyid (good) chain. (Ahmad, Hadîth no. 1980; at-Tayâlisî, Hadîth no. 2768)

It is narrated on the authority of Â’ishah Radiyallâhu Anhâ that she said to the Nabî Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam, “Such and such will be enough for you in Safiyyah.” It is said in some narrations that she meant that Safiyyah Radiyallâhu Anhâ was short. The Nabî Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said,

“You have said such a word that if it was mixed into the ocean, it would have commixed.”

Âishah Radiyallâhu Anhâ said: I was narrating to him about a man, and he Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said,

“I do not like that a man was narrated to me while I have such-and-such (faults).” (Abû Dâwûd, 4875; at-Tirmidhî, 2502)

Abû Dâwûd and at-Tirmidhî reported it, and at-Tirmidhî said, “It is Hasan Sahîh”.

Chapter on what Came Regarding Misguiding the Blind from the Path

It is narrated on the authority of Abû Hurayrah Radiyallâhu Anh that the Nabî Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam cursed the one who misguides the blind from the path.

Abû Dâwûd narrated on the authority of Mu’âdh Radiyallâhu Anh in a Marfû Hadîth (that Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said),

“Whoever protects a Mu’min (believer) from a Munâfiq (hypocrite) who harmed him, on Yawm’ul Qiyâmah (the Day of Judgment), Allâh will send an angel to protect his flesh from the fire of Jahannam. And whoever accuses a Muslim intending to disgrace him, Allâh will imprison him upon the bridge of Jahannam until he gets out from what he says.” (Abû Dâwûd, Hadîth no. 4883)
Shaykh'ul Islâm Ibnu Taymiyyah Rahimahullâh stated,

And the statement of Allâhu Taâlâ,

And Allâhu Taâlâ’s statement in the Âyah,

“… And do not sell My Verses for a miserable price…” (al-Baqarah, 2/41; al-Mâ’idah 5/44)

It is narrated on the authority of Ibnu Umar Radiyallâhu Anhumâ in a Marfû Hadîth (that Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said),

“Allâh cursed the one who gives Rushwah and the one who takes Rushwah.”

At-Tirmidhi said the Hadîth is Sahîh.

And Ahmad narrated on the authority of Thawbân Radiyallâhu Anh that

“Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam cursed the one who gives Rushwah, the one who takes Rushwah, and ar-Râ’ish.” (Ahmad, Hadîth no. 22399)

(Ar-Râ’ish) meaning, the one who mediates between the two parties.

Chapter on Presents for the Official Employees by Way of Ghulûl (Defrauding; Taking Something Unlawful for a Person, Benefiting from it, and Breaching the Trust)

It is narrated on the authority of Abû Humayd that he said: Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam hired a man to collect Sadaqah (charity). When he returned, he said, “This is yours, and this was given to me as a present.” So Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said,

“What is the matter of this man which we employed for a matter which Allâh gave us an authority over, then says, “This is yours, and this was given to me as a present!” Why didn’t he sit in his father’s or his mother’s house and see whether anything would be gifted to him or not? By Him, in whose Hand the soul of Muhammad is, not a single one of you will take anything without being his right except that he would face Allâh and while carrying it on Yawm’ul Qiyâmah (the Day of Judgment), even if it is a camel which rambles, a cow which moos, or a sheep which bleats.” Then he Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam raised his arms until we saw the whiteness of his armpits. Then he said, “O Allâh, have I conveyed?” He said this three times.” (al-Bukhârî Hadîth no. 7174; Muslim Hadîth no. 1463)

Chapter on Gifts for Intercession

It is narrated on the authority of Abû Umâmah Radiyallâhu Anh in a Marfû Hadîth (that Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said),

“Whoever intercedes for his brother an intercession which he was given a gift for and he accepts the gift; then he has come to a door from the doors of Ribâ (usury).” (Abû Dâwûd, Hadîth no. 3541)

It was narrated by Abû Dâwûd.

Ibrâhîm al-Harbî narrated from Abdullâh bin Mas’ûd Radiyallâhu Anhu that he said:

“As-Suht (devouring illegal things)[1] is asking a man to fulfill a need -which he fulfills-, and he is gifted a gift which he accepts.” (Musannaf, Ibnu Abî Shaybah, Hadîth no. 20868)

Masrûq narrated from Abdullâh bin Mas’ûd Radiyallâhu Anh that (he said),

“Whoever wards off oppression from a Muslim, thereafter he gives him a little or a lot in return for it; then it is as-Suht.”

I said: “O Abû Abd’ur Rahmân! We only considered as-Suht as Rushwah (bribery) in judgment.” He said,

“That is Kufr”

Then he recited,

“And whoever does not judge by what Allâh has revealed - then it is those who are the disbelievers.” (al-Mâ’idah 5/44)
 1. Allâhu Taâlâ said,

“And you see many of them hurrying for sin and transgression, and eating as-Suht (illegal things). Evil indeed is that which they have been doing. Why do not the rabbis and the religious learned men forbid them from uttering sinful words and from eating as-Suht? Evil indeed is that which they have been performing.” (al-Mâ’idah 5/62-63)

Chapter on Ghulûl (Defrauding; Taking Something Unlawful for a Person, Benefiting from it, and Breaching the Trust from Booty)

And the statement of Allâhu Taâlâ in the Âyah,

“It is not for any Prophet to illegally take a part of booty, and whosoever deceives his companions as regards the booty, he shall bring forth on the Day of Resurrection that which he took (illegally).” (Âl-i Imrân 3/161)

It is narrated on the authority of Abû Hurayrah Radiyallâhu Anh that he said:

When Allâhu Taâlâ opened Khaybar, we went to the valley, and Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam had a slave of his with him. When we went to the valley, he was struck with an arrow, and thereupon, he died. So we said, “Congratulations be to him with martyrdom o Rasûlullâh!” Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said, “No, by the One whose Hand my soul is in! The cloak which he took on the day of Khaybar will certainly blaze with fire on him; he took it from the booty which was not divided.” Thus, the people were terrified. So a man came with one or two shoelaces and said, “O Rasûlullâh! I acquired these on the day of Khaybar!” Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said, “One or two shoelaces from Nâr (fire i.e. Jahannam).” (al-Bukhârî, Hadîth no. 6707; Muslim, Hadîth no. 183)

It is narrated by both of them (i.e. al-Bukhârî and Muslim).
Shaykh'ul Islâm Ibnu Taymiyyah Rahimahullâh stated,

Chapter on Obeying the Rulers

And the statement of Allâhu Taâlâ in the Âyah,

“O you who believe, obey Allâh and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you.” (an-Nisâ 4/59)

And also the statement of Allâhu Taâlâ in the Âyah,

“So fear Allâh as much as you are able and listen and obey.” (at-Taghâbun 64/16)

It is narrated on the authority of Mu’âdh bin Jabal Radiyallâhu Anh in a Marfû Hadîth (that Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said),

“Military Expeditions are two. As for the one who went on an expedition hoping for the Wajh (Face) of Allâh, obeys the leader, spends his valuable, and is associates gently with his partner, verily, all of his sleep and waking up is an Ajr (good deed) for him. And as for the one who went on an expedition in haughtiness, showing-off, and fame, disobeys the Imâm and causes Fasâd (corruption) on the earth, then he will not return even with the bare minimum of awards.” (Abû Dâ’wûd, Hadîth no. 2515; an-Nasâ’î, Hadîth no. 3188, 4195)

It was narrated by Abû Dâwûd and an-Nasâ'î.

It is also narrated on the authority of Ibnu Umar Radiyallâhu Anhumâ in a Marfû Hadîth (that Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said),

“It is obligatory upon the person to hear and obey in what he likes and dislikes, except if he is ordered with Ma’siyah (sins). If he is commanded Ma’siyah, then he should neither listen to him nor obey him.” (al-Bukhârî, Hadîth no. 2955, 7144; Muslim, Hadîth no. 1839)

It was recorded by al-Bukhârî and Muslim.
Shaykh'ul Islâm Ibnu Taymiyyah Rahimahullâh stated,

Chapter on Leaving the Jamâ’ah (Muslim community)

The statement of Allâhu Taâlâ in the Âyah,

“And whoever opposes the Messenger after guidance has become clear to him and follows other than the way of the believers…” (an-Nisâ 4/115)

And also the statement of Allâhu Taâlâ in the Âyah,

“And hold firmly to the rope of Allâh all together and do not become disunited.” (Âl-i Imrân 3/103)

It is narrated from Ibnu Abbâs Radiyallâhu Anhumâ in a Marfû Hadîth (that Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam),

“Whoever dislikes something (which he sees) from his ruler should be patient. For verily, whoever leaves the obedience of the Sultân (ruler) with the length of a lace will die a death of Jâhiliyyah (pre-Islâmic period of ignorance).” (al-Bukhârî, Hadîth no. 7053; Muslim, Hadîth no. 1849)

It was recorded by al-Bukhârî and Muslim.

Muslim narrated from Hudhayfah Radiyallâhu Anh in a Marfû Hadîth (that Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam),

“There will come after me leaders who will not guide with my guidance, nor act in accordance to my Sunnah. People whose hearts will be the hearts of devils in human bodies will arise amongst them.” I said, “O Rasûlullâh! How should I act if I reach that?” Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam replied, “Hear and obey, even if your back is beaten, and even if your wealth is taken! Hear and obey!” (Muslim, Hadîth no. 1847)

He also narrated from Arfajah al-Ashja’î Radiyallâhu Anh in a Marfû Hadîth (that Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam),

“Whoever comes to you while all your affairs are under one man wanting to split your unity as a staff splits apart and to separate your Jamâ’ah, then kill him.” (Muslim, Hadîth no. 1480)

Chapter on What Came Regarding Fitnah (Trials)

The statement of Allâhu Taâlâ in the Âyah,

“And fear a Fitnah (trial) which will not strike those who have wronged among you exclusively…” (al-Anfâl 8/25)

And also the statement of Allâhu Taâlâ in the Âyah,

“Say, “He is the (one) Able to send upon you affliction from above you or from beneath your feet or to confuse you (so you become) sects…” (al-An’âm 6/65)

It is narrated on the authority of Ibnu Amr Radiyallâhu Anhumâ that he said: We were on a journey when we stopped at a place. Thereafter, an announcer of Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam announced: as-Salâtu Jâmi’ah! (Congregate for the Prayer!) We congregated near Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam. So Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said,

“Surely, there has not been any Nabî before me except that it was a responsibility upon him to direct his Ummah (nation) to the thing which he knew to be the best for them and to warn them from the thing which he knew to be the most evil for them. Verily, protection from evil was assigned in the early period of this Ummah of yours, and its latter period will be afflicted with afflictions and affairs which you dislike. Fitnah (trials) will come, each being lighter than the other. A Fitnah will come and the Mu’min (believer) will say, “This is my destruction!” Then, it will be over, and another Fitnah will come and the Mu’min will say, “This, this is my destruction.” So, death should come to the one who wants to be removed away from the Nâr (fire; Jahannam) and admitted to Jannah (paradise) while he believes in Allâh and in the Last Day. He should also treat the people with that which he loves Allâh to treat him with. Whoever pledges allegiance to his Imâm (leader) and gives him the pledge of his hand and the sincerity of his heart (i.e. submits to him both outwardly as well as inwardly), then he should obey him if he is able to. If another man comes disputing the Imâm (for his right to lead), then strike the neck of the latter!” (Muslim, Hadîth no. 1844)

It was narrated by Muslim.

Muslim also narrated from Abû Hurayrah Radiyallâhu Anh in a Marfû Hadîth (that Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said),

“Hasten with deeds in anticipation of trials which are like portions of a dark night. A man will wake up as a Mu’min in the morning and will be a Kâfir (disbeliever) in the evening, and a man will be a Mu’min in the evening and will wake up a Kâfir in the morning, selling his religion for some worldly goods.” (Muslim, Hadîth no. 118)

Muslim also narrated from Ma’qil bin Yasâr in a Marfû Hadîth (that Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said),

“Ibâdah (worship) in great commotion is like migrating to me.” (Muslim, Hadîth no. 2948)

Al-Bukhârî and Muslim narrated from Hudhayfah Radiyallâhu Anh that Umar Radiyallâhu Anh said, “Which one of you memorize the statement of the Nabî Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam regarding Fitnah?”

I said, “I.”

Umar Radiyallâhu Anh said, “Bring them forward, for verily, you have the courage to do so.”

I said, “I heard the Nabî Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam saying,

“The trial of a man with his family, wealth, and neighbor is expiated by the Salâh (prayer), Siyâm (fasting), Sadaqah (charity), al-Amri Bi’l Ma’rûf (enjoining good), and Nahyu An’il Munkar (prohibiting from evil).”

Umar Radiyallâhu Anh said, “This is not what I intend, I only intended the Fitnah which will emerge like the waves of oceans.”

I said, “O Amîr’ul Mu’minîn (leader of the believers), what have you got to do with this? Verily, between you and it is a locked door!”

Umar Radiyallâhu Anh said, “Will the door be opened or will it be broken?”

I said, “Rather, it will be broken.”

Umar Radiyallâhu Anh said, “It is more likely that it will not be locked again.”

I (the narrator) said to Hudhayfah, “Did Umar know who this door was?”

Hudhayfah Radiyallâhu Anh said, “Yes, just as he knows that night time is before tomorrow. Verily, I have narrated to him a Hadîth without any mistakes.”

We feared asking him “Who is the door”, so we said to Masrûq, “Ask him!” So Masrûq asked him and Hudhayfah said, “It is Umar.” (al-Bukhârî, Hadîth no. 525, 1435, 1895, 3586, 7096; Muslim, Hadîth no. 144)

Muslim also narrated from Abû Bakrah Radiyallâhu Anh in a Marfû Hadîth (that Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said),

“Verily, there shall be Fitan (pl. Fitnah; trials) in which the one who is sitting in it will be better than the one standing, and the one who is standing in it will be better than the one is running towards it, except when the Fitnah goes down or stops. So whoever has a camel should stick on to his camel, whoever has sheep should stick to his sheep, and whoever has land should stick to his land.” Thereupon a man said, “O Rasûlullâh! What is your opinion regarding the one who does not have a camel, sheep, or land?” Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said, “He should turn towards his sword and smash it with a rock. Thereafter, he should escape to salvation if he can.” Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam then said, “Be weary! Have I conveyed?” He Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said it thrice. Then a man said: “O Rasûlullâh! What is your opinion if I was coerced until I was made to choose on one of the two ranks, so that either a man will strike me with his sword or that an arrow was shot thereafter killing me?” He Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said, “He will obtain (thereby) your sin and his sin, so he will be among the companions of the Nâr (Fire; Hell-fire).” (Muslim, Hadîth no. 2887)

Ibnu Mâjah and Abû Dâwûd narrated from Sa’d that he said,

I said, “O Rasûlullâh! What is your opinion if a person enters upon my house and stretches his hand out to kill me?” Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said, “Be like the better one of the two sons of Âdam.” Then he recited this verse,

“If you do stretch your hand against me to kill me, I shall never stretch my hand against you to kill you. Indeed, I fear Allâh, the Lord of the Âlamîn (universe).” (al-Mâ’idah 5/28) (Abû Dâwûd, Hadîth no. 4257)

Chapter on The Greatness of Killing a Soul Which Allâh Made Harâm (Unlawful to Kill) Except With a Right

It is narrated on the authority of Sâlim bin Abdillâh bin Umar Radiyallâhu Anhum that he said, “O people of Irâq! How strange it is that you ask regarding about the small (sins) and how much do you ride upon the big (sins)! I heard my father (Ibnu Umar Radiyallâhu Anhumâ) say, “I heard Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam say,

“Verily, Fitnah (trial/tribulation) will come from there -and he pointed with his hand towards the east from where the Qarn’ush Shaytân (horn of the devil) rises. And you shall strike the necks of one another. Indeed Mûsâ, Alayh’is Salâm erred when he killed a person from amongst the family of Fir’awn, so Allâhu Taâlâ said,

“And you killed someone, but We saved you from retaliation and tried you with a (severe) trial.” (Tâhâ 20/40) (Muslim, Hadîth no. 2905)

Muslim narrated it.

Al-Bukhârî and Muslim narrated from al-Miqdâd Radiyallâhu Anh that he said,

I said, “O Rasûlullâh! What do you say if a man from amongst the Kuffâr (pl. Kâfir; disbelievers) met me, thereafter we fight each other and he strikes one of my hands with the sword and cuts it off, then he seeks refuge from me to a tree and says, “I have submitted to Allâh!” Should I kill him?” Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said, “Do not kill him! For verily, if you kill him, he will be in your position before you killed him and you will be in his position before he uttered the word which he said.” (al-Bukhârî, Hadîth no. 4019, 6865; Muslim, Hadîth no. 95)

Al-Bukhârî and Muslim narrated from Usâmah bin Zayd Radiyallâhu Anh that he said,

“Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam sent us to (the sub-tribe) al-Huraqât from (the tribe) Juhaynah, so we arrived at their water sources in the morning. I and a man from amongst the Ansâr met a man from amongst them. When we overcame him, he said “La Ilaha Illallâh (there is no -true- deity -worthy of worship- except for Allâh)!” So the Ansârî refrained from him and then I stabbed him with my spear and consequently, I killed him.

When we arrived back, the news of the incident reached Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam. He said,

“O Usâmah! Did you kill him after he said La Ilaha Illallâh?”

I said, “O Rasûlullâh! He only said it to seek refuge!” So Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said:

“Did you kill him after he said La Ilaha Illallâh?”

He Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam did not stop repeating this until I wished that I had not became a Muslim before that day.”

It is narrated in another narration that he Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said,

“Did you tear his heart?”

It is narrated in the narration of Muslim that Usâmah Radiyallâhu Anh said,

“O Rasûlullâh! Ask forgiveness for me!” Thereupon, Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said,

“What will you do with La Ilaha Illallâh, when it comes on the Day of Judgment?” (al-Bukhârî, Hadîth no. 4269, 6872; Muslim, Hadîth no. 96-97)

Al-Bukhârî narrated from Ibnu Umar Radiyallâhu Anhumâ in a Marfû Hadîth (that Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said),

“As long as he does not pour Harâm (unlawful) blood, a slave will not stop being free in regards to his Dîn (religion).” (al-Bukhârî, Hadîth no. 6862)

Chapter on Increasing Crowds During Fitan (pl. of Fitnah; Trials and Tribulations)

It is narrated on the authority of Abû Hurayrah Radiyallâhu Anh that Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said,

“Whoever holds arms against us is not of us and whoever deceives us is not of us.”[1]

Muslim narrated it.

It is narrated in al-Bukhârî from Muhammad bin Abd’ir Rahmân Abi’l Aswad that he said, “The people of Madînah were forced to prepare an army (to fight against the people of Shâm during the caliphate of Abdullâh Ibn’uz Zubayr), and I was enlisted in it. Then I met Ikrimah and I informed him about it. So he severely prohibited me and said, “Abdullâh bin Abbâs Radiyallâhu Anhumâ informed me that that a group of Muslimûn were with the Mushrikûn increasing their crowds. An arrow would come and strike one of them which would kill him or he would be struck (with a sword) and be killed. So Allâhu Taâlâ revealed this Âyah:

“Indeed, those whom the angels take (in death) while wronging themselves…” (an-Nisâ 4/97)[2]

And the statement of Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam

“However, the one who is pleased and follows…”[3]
 1. Muslim, Hadîth no. 101.

 2. Al-Bukhârî, Hadîth no. 4596, 7085.

 3. Muslim, Hadîth no. 1854.

Chapter on Mentioning Mistreating Parents

And the statement of Allâhu Taâlâ:

“Give thanks to Me and to your parents, unto Me is the final destination.” (Luqmân 31/14)

It is narrated on the authority of Ibnu Umar Radiyallâhu Anhumâ that,

“A man came to the Nabî Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam and said, “I give you my pledge of allegiance regarding Hijrah and Jihâd and I seek the reward from Allâh!” Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said, “Do you have any one of your parents who is alive?” The man said, “Yes, rather both of them are alive.” He Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said, “So you are seeking the reward from Allâhu Taâlâ?” The man said, “Yes!” He Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said, “Return to your parents and beautify your companionship.”[1]

Both al-Bukhârî and Muslim narrated it, but the wording belongs to Muslim.

Mu’âwiyah bin Jâhimah narrated that Jâhimah came to the Nabî Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam and said,

“O Rasûlullâh! I want to go out on an expedition and I came to consult you!” Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said, “Do you have a mother?” I said, “Yes.” Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said, “Take care of her. For verily, Jannah (Paradise) is under her legs.”[2]

Ahmad and an-Nasâ’î narrated it.

It is narrated on the authority of Abû Hurayrah Radiyallâhu Anh that a man said,

“O Rasûlullâh! Who amongst people is the most deserving of my good company?” Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said, “Your mother.” The man said, “Then who?” Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said, “Your mother.” The man said, “Then who?” Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said, “Your mother.” The man then said, “Then who?” Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said, “Your Father.”[3]

Al-Bukhârî and Muslim narrated it.

Al-Bukhârî narrated from Ibnu Umar Radiyallâhu Anhumâ in a Marfû Hadîth (that Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said),

“The major sins are associating partners with Allâh, mistreating parents, killing a soul, and taking a false oath.”[4]
 1. Al-Bukhârî, Hadîth no. 3004, 5972; Muslim, Hadîth no. 2549.

 2. An-Nasâ’î, Hadîth no. 3104; Ahmad, Hadîth no. 15538; with similar wording in Ibnu Mâjah, Hadîth no. 2781.

 3. Al-Bukhârî, Hadîth no. 5971; Muslim, Hadîth no. 2548.

 4. Al-Bukhârî, Hadîth no. 2653, 6675, 6870-6871.

Chapter on Mentioning Severing Ties of Kinship

And the statement of Allâhu Taâlâ in the Âyah,

“But He does not let anyone go astray thereby except those who are sinful. Those who break the Covenant of Allâh after it has been made binding, and cut off the relations Allâh has commanded to be joined.” (al-Baqarah 2/26-27)

Al-Bukhârî and Muslim narrated from Jubayr bin Mut’im in a Marfû Hadîth (that Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said),

“The severer of ties of Kinship will not enter Jannah (Paradise).”[1]

Al-Bukhârî and Muslim also narrated from Abû Hurayrah Radiyallâhu Anh in a Marfû Hadîth (that Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said),

“Verily, Allâhu Taâlâ created the creation. Once He completed it, the womb came forth and said, “This is the place to seek refuge in You from severing ties of kinship!” Allâh said, “Yes! Wouldn’t it please you that I tie relations with the one who ties relations with you and that I severe My relations with the one who severs you?” The womb said, “Of course!” Allâh said, “For you is that.” Then, Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said, “Read the Âyah if you wish,”

“So would you perhaps, if you turned away, cause corruption on earth and sever your (ties of) relationship?” (Muhammad 47/22)[2]

Chapter on Harming Neighbours

And the statement of Allâhu Taâlâ in the Âyah,

“And do good to the near neighbor, the neighbor farther away, the companion at your side…” (an-Nisâ 4/36)

It is narrated on the authority of Abû Shurayh Radiyallâhu Anh in a Marfû Hadîth (that Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said),

“Whoever believes in Allâh and the Last Day should honour his guest. Whosoever believes in Allâh and the Last Day should be good towards his neighbour. Whosoever believes in Allâh and the Last Day should speak good or should stay silent.”[1]

Muslim narrated it.

It is narrated from al-Bukhârî and Muslim on the authority of Abû Hurayrah Radiyallâhu Anhu in a Marfû Hadîth (that Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said),

“By Allâh, he does not believe! By Allâh, he does not believe! By Allâh, he does not believe!” It was said, “Who is he O Rasûlullâh!” Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said, “The one whose neighbour is not safe from his “Bawâ’iq”.”

In another narration it says,

“The one whose neighbour is not safe from his “Bawâ’iq” will not enter Jannah (Paradise)!”[2]

The word “Bawâ’iq” is disaster and evil.

While considering it Hasan (good), at-Tirmidhî narrated from Ibnu Umar Radiyallâhu Anhumâ in a Marfû Hadîth (that Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said),

“The best of companions in the sight of Allâh is the one who is best to his companion, and the best neighbour in the sight of Allâh is the one who is best to his neighbour.”[3]

It is also narrated in the “Musnad” (of Imâm Ahmad) and the “Sahîh” of al-Hâkim on the authority of Ibnu Umar Radiyallâhu Anhumâ in a Marfû Hadîth (that Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said),

“If any people of a courtyard wake up whilst there is amongst them is a hungry man, then the protection of Allâh has been freed from.”[4]

It is also narrated in the “Sahîh” of al-Hâkim on the authority of Ibnu Abbâs Radiyallâhu Anhumâ in a Marfû Hadîth (that Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said),

“The Mu’min (believer) is not a person one who is full whilst his neighbour is hungry.”[5]

In another narration it reads,

“The one who sleeps full whilst his neighbour is hungry has not believed.”[6]

“The one who does not show mercy to our young and does not recognise the nobility of our elderly is not from us.”[1]

At-Tirmidhî graded it Sahîh (authentic).

“Verily, honouring the grey haired Muslim, the carrier of the Qur’ân who does not exceed the limits regarding it nor turns away from it, and honouring the just Sultân is from glorifying Allâhu Taâlâ.”[2]

The Hadîth is Hasan (good).

“Therefore the righteous women are devoutly obedient (to Allâh and to their husbands), and guard in the husband’s absence what Allâh orders them to guard (e.g. their chastity, their husband's property, etc.).” (an-Nisâ 4/34)

It is narrated on the authority of Abû Hurayrah Radiyallâhu Anhu in a Marfû Hadîth (that Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said),

“By the One whose Hand my soul is in, there is no man who calls his wife to his bed and she refuses except that the ones in the sky will be angry with her until her husband is pleased with her.”[1]

In another narration,

“Except that the angels will curse her until she wakes up.”[2]

Al-Bukhârî and Muslim narrated it.

It is also narrated on the authority of Abû Hurayrah Radiyallâhu Anhu in a Marfû Hadîth (that Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said),

Chapter on Harming the Righteous

And the statement of Allâhu Taâlâ in the Âyah,

“And those who harm believing men and believing women without their having done anything (wrong)…”[1] (al-Ahzâb 33/58)

It is narrated on the authority of Abû Hurayrah Radiyallâhu Anh that, “Abû Sufyân came to Salmân, Suhayb, and Bilâl in a small group. They said, “The swords of Allâh have not taken what they deserve from the necks of the enemies of Allâh.” So Abû Bakr said, “Do you say this to the elder of Quraysh and their leader?” Thereupon, he went to the Nabî Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam and informed him of what happened. He Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said,

“O Abû Bakr! Perhaps, you have angered them. If you have angered them, then you have angered your Lord.”

He said, “O my brothers! Perhaps I have angered you...” They immediately said, “No. May Allâh forgive you my brother!”[2]

Narrated by Muslim.

At-Tirmidhî also narrated from Abû Bakrah Radiyallâhu Anh while considering it Hasan (good) in a Marfû Hadîth (that Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam said),

“Whoever insults the Sultân will be insulted by Allâh.”[3]
 1. The verse in full reads,

And those who harm believing men and believing women without their having done anything (wrong), they shall bear the burden of slander and a manifest sin. (al-Ahzâb 33/58)

Chapter on What Came Regarding the Trust, Betraying it, and the Explanation of the Trust

And the statement of Allâhu Taâlâ in the Âyah,

“Indeed, Allâh commands you to render trusts to whom they are due.” (an-Nisâ 4/58)

And also His statement,

“Indeed, We offered the trust to the heavens and the earth and the mountains, and they declined to bear it and feared it; but man (undertook to) bear it. Indeed, he was unjust and ignorant.” (al-Ahzâb 33/72)

Al-Bayhaqî narrated from Ibnu Mas’ûd Radiyallâhu Anh that he said,

“Being killed in the path of Allâh expiates everything except for the trust and the debt. A slave will be brought on Yawm’ul Qiyâmah (the Day of Judgment), and it will be said to him even if he is killed in the path of Allâh, “Pay your trust!” He will say, “O my Lord how can I do so while the world has went away?” It will be said to him, “Proceed with him to al-Hâwiyah (the Abyss; the pit of Hell-Fire).” So he will be departed towards al-Hâwiyah. His trust will be revealed for him, in the same fashion it was on the day it was given to him. Thereupon, he will see it and recognize it. So he will fall down in its traces (in the Abyss) until he reaches it. Then he will carry it upon his shoulders until he assumes that he will come out of it, the trust will slide of his shoulders. Then he will fall down in its traces (in the Abyss) forever.”

Then Ibnu Mas’ûd Radiyallâhu Anh said, “Salâh (prayer) is a trust, ablution is a trust, the weight is a trust, the measure is a trust.” And he counted some other things. “And the most serious of these is the deposits.” The narrator said, “Thereupon, I came to al-Barâ Radiyallâhu Anh and said, “Do you not notice what Ibnu Mas’ûd has said? He said such-and-such!” Al-Barâ said, “He has spoken the truth. Did you not hear Allâhu Taâlâ say,

“Indeed, Allâh commands you to render trusts to whom they are due.” (an-Nisâ 4/58)

Zayd bin Aslam said,

“The trust is fasting, bathing from sexual impurities, and that which is concealed from the Islâmic legal rulings.”
