Zinaa and Among its Evil Consequences...

Ibn’ul Qayyim, Rawdat’ul Muhibbin wa Nuzhat’ul Mushtaaqin, 360

Ibn’ul Qayyim (rahimahullah) stated the following with regards to Zinaa and among its evil consequences:

Zinaa (fornication) combines all the characteristics of Sharr (evil), such as lack of Din (religious commitment), loss of Wara (piety), Fasaad (corruption) of Muruwwah (dignity) and lack of Ghayrah (protective jealousy). You will never find any Zaani (Zina doer) who has Wara, Wafa (keeping the word), Sidq (speaking truthfully), caring for a friend or has any true sense of Ghayrah concerning his womenfolk. Ghadara (betrayal), Kazb (lying), Khiyaanah (treachery), lack of Hayaa (dignity), lack of Muraaqabah (awareness that Allah is always watching), failure to guard the sacred limits, and absence of Ghayrah from the heart are all consequences of Zinaa.

Among the consequences of Zinaa is Ghadab (wrath) of the Rabb (Lord) with corrupting his Haraam (female members of a Muslim household) and his family. If a man were to transgress against any king among the kings in such a manner, the king’s response would be most severe. Among the consequences of Zinaa is blackness and Dhulumat (darkness) of the face, which will be covered with misery and gloom that are apparent to the onlookers. Among the consequences of Zinaa is Dhulumat in the heart and extinguishing of its Nur (light) that which leads to extinguishing of Nur on the face and Dhulumat overshadowing it. Among the consequences of Zinaa is inevitable poverty, in an Athar (report), Allah Ta’ala states:

“I am Allah, the Destroyer of the Taghout and the Bringer of Faqr (poverty) to the adulterer.”

Among the consequences of Zinaa is loss of dignity and Hurmah (respect), as the one who commits this deed becomes insignificant before his Rabb and before His slaves. Among the consequences of Zinaa is it takes away from him the best names (i.e. attributes), namely Iffah (chastity), Birr (righteousness) and Adaalah (justice), and it gives him the opposite, namely Faajir (immorality), Faasiq (evildoing), Zaani (adultery) and Khaain (betrayal). Among the consequences of Zinaa is it takes away from him the name of the Mu’min (believer), just as it is narrated in the Sahihayn (two Sahih i.e. Sahih of Buykhari and Sahih of Muslim) from the Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) that indeed he said:

“The adulterer is not a believer at the time when he is committing adultery.”
(Bukhari, Hadith no: 6810; Muslim, Hadith no: 57)

So he loses the name of Iman’ul Mutlaq (in general terms), even though this Hadith does not suggest that he has lost Mutlaq’ul Iman (complete faith).

Ja‘far bin Muhammad was asked about this Hadith, and he drew a circle on the ground and said:

“This is the circle of Iman.”

Then he drew another circle around it and said:

“This is the circle of Islam. If a person commits Zinaa, he goes out of this circle (i.e. Iman) but he does not go out of that circle (i.e. Islam)...”
Shaykh’ul Islam Ibnu Taymiyyah (rahimahullah) said:

"All statements that had been said by the Mutaakhirrin (latter ones) differing from the Mutaqaddimin (predecessors) and that had not been previously mentioned by any other, is a mistake. As Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal (rahimahullah) said:

"Refrain from speaking about a matter without an Imam!.." (Ibnu Taymiyyah, Majma’ul Fatawa, 21/291)
