The Resemblance of the Month of Ramadhn to Ysuf Alayhis Salm
Ibnul Jawz Rahimahullh[1]

367- The Months Resembling the Brethren of Ysuf

It is said that the twelve months are like the sons of Yaqb Alayhi wa Alayhimus Salm. The Month of Ramadhn among the other months is like Ysuf among his brothers. So, just like Ysuf was the most beloved of sons to Yaqb, Ramadhn is likewise the most beloved month to the Knower of the Unseen.

368- A Few Anecdotes Regarding This

A nice anecdote for the Ummah of Muhammad Sallallhu Alayhi wa Sallam (to ponder over) is: If Ysuf had the forbearance and the amnesty which engulfed their cruelness to say,

﴿لَا تَثْرِيب عَلَيْكُم الْيَوْم.﴾
No blame will there be upon you today... (Ysuf 12/92)

Then (likewise) is this Month of Ramadhn; it withholds mercy, blessings, benefaction, goodness, salvation from the Fire, and Forgiveness from al-Malik al-Qahhr (the Irresistibly Supreme King) which prevails over all months and overwhelms what we commit therein of sins and offenses.

Another nice anecdote: The indication in it; Ysufs brothers came relying on him in the barricade of shortcomings and putting aside the deficiencies after they committed mistakes and errors. Thereafter, Ysuf excellently received them as guests, corrected their circumstance, informed them of the pinnacle of anticipations, fed them while they were in a state of hunger, allowed them to return, and said to his servants, Place their merchandise into their saddlebags so they might recognize it. Then, one was barricaded from the shortcoming of eleven. Likewise is the Month of Ramadhn, it is one month and the other months are eleven. And in our actions are shortcomings and what kind of shortcomings, inadequacy and what kind of inadequacy, and negligence with regards to obeying al-Alm al-Khabr (the All-Knowing, the All-Aware).

We hope that in Ramadhn, we are able to make up for what we forsake regarding this in the other months, that we correct our corrupt affairs therein, that the month is sealed upon us with happiness and delight, and that we hold on tightly therein to the rope of al-Malik al-Ghafr (Forgiving King), if Allhu Tal wills with His bestowal and kindness, pardon and forgiveness. Verily, He is the Hearer and Seer. What an Excellent Protector is He and (what) an Excellent Helper is He!

369- The Sons of Yaqb and Ramadhn

Another allusion is that Yaqb had eleven sons who were present before him. He would look at them, see them, knew of their situations and what they revealed from their actions. His eyesight did not return with any of their clothing. Instead, it returned and he became seeing with Ysufs shirt. His eyesight became radiant, it became strong after being weak, and seeing after being blind. Likewise, when the disobedient sinner smells the scents of Ramadhn, sits therein with those who remind him of Allh, recites the Qurn, befriends them on the condition of Islm and mn, and avoids backbiting and speaking calumny, with Allhs will, he will become forgiven after he was a sinner, he will become close (to Allh) after he was distant, he will be able to see with his heart after it was blind, he will become happy with coming close to Allh after being wretched, he will be met with mercy after he was met with anger, he will be provided for without effort or being exhausted, he will be granted success for his entire life, he will have his soul taken out with kindness when he dies, he will be favoured with forgiveness when he meets (Allh), and he will be honoured in Jannah with the ranks of assemblage.

I remind you of Allh, Allh! Take advantage of this virtue during these few days and by the will of Allh, you will be pursued by ample blessing, sublime status, precious level(s of reward), and a long period of relaxation.

By Allh, this is the exuberant relaxation, the degree in progress, the pleasing state, the magnanimous Jannah, the delightful blessing, and the pleasing evening. This is not achieved except by showing reverence to this month which al-Jabbr (the Compeller) exalted and Muhammad the chosen one was favoured with. The destiny of one who does not show reverence to this month is the fire.

Shaykhul Islm Ibnu Taymiyyah Rahimahullh said,

والعالم يعرف الجاهل؛ لأنه كان جاهلا، والجاهل لا يعرف العالم لأنه لم يكن عالما

The lim (scholar) recognizes the Jhil (ignorant) since he was once a Jhil. The Jhil does not recognize the lim since he has never been an lim. (Majmul Fatw, 13/235)
