Statements by the Scholars Regarding the Term TâghûtAs-Suyûtî Rahimahullâh (911 H)"Al-Firyâbî, Sa'îd bin Mansûr, Ibnu Jarîr, and Ibnu Abî Hâtim recorded on the authority of Umar Ibn'ul Khattâb Radiyallâhu Anh that he said, "Tâghût is the devil."
Ibnu Jarîr and Ibnu Abi Hâtim recorded on the authority of Jâbir bin Abdillâh Radiyallâhu Anh that he said once he was asked about what the Tâghûts are, "They are the soothsayers upon whom the devils descend."
Ibnu Abi Hâtim recorded on the authority of Ikrimah that he said, "Tâghût is the soothsayer."
Ibnu Jarîr recorded on the authority of Abu'l Âliyah that he said: "Tâghût is the magician."
Ibnu Jarîr, Ibn'ul Mundhir, and Ibnu Abî Hâtim recorded on the authority of Mujâhid that he said, "Tâghût is the devil in the image of man. They appeal to him for legal decisions and he is in control of their affairs."
Ibnu Abî Hâtim recorded on the authority of Mâlik bin Anas that he said, "Tâghût are things that are worshipped besides Allâh."1
